Well I don't really agree with that. Though I really am shocked that PJ wasn't nominated, I don't think he should have replaced Polanski. The Pianist is a GOOD movie. PJ should have replaced the guy who directed Chicago. Chicago wasn't any good, and nothing compared to LOTR or the Pianist.
And about the child molestation. Well, thats half right. It was actualy a "sex with a minor" conviction. He supposedly didn't know how old she was. And she didn't file for the rape either, it was her parents. Though I don't agree with what he did, I should think that he got a bit more exentric after Charles Manson & Co. Got a little knife happy with Polanski's family. Not to mention the fact that he is one of the few people who survived through out ww2 in the concentration camps of Poland.
The Pianist was a good movie and it deserves that oscar amongst those that were nominated. Of course if PJ would have also been nominated, and Polanski won, then I might think a bit more on how they came to that discision.
Polanski deserved to be nominated, but the director for "the Hours" and "Chicago" didn't.
