****in' corrupted movie files. I've got a whole stack of 'em that I was saving to compile this weekend, but they've all got nil pointer problems at the end and I can only open them in RDS. This means I can save them as sequenced image files, but NOT as regular .avi types. Its GIF compression is pretty lousy, and my cheap freeware GIF animator can't take anything but GIFs.

So, anyone got a good freeware/shareware GIF animator that takes JPEG or PCX files? One that doesn't want to eat my registry whole like the Ulead one?

You could always use IrFanView and batch convert them all.

I could, but Irfanview is even worse.

Plus, there are more than 800 600x400 frames in each one of these ****ers, and I don't think Irfan's built for that much.

I've got one now, but it only imports frames ten at a time. I've been working at it for over an hour, and my life is pure pain. HONEST TO GOD, WHAT IMBECILE MAKES AN ANIMATOR WITH A LOW LIMIT ON HOW MANY FRAMES YOU CAN IMPORT AT ONCE???

you could use Flash.

most i've ever done (seen anyone do personally anyway) is a 2000+ frame movie.

800 frames isn't all that much though... how long is the movie?

yeah, you could try using flash.  if their filenames are similar, then Flash will recognize them.  you could therefore import just the first frame, and Flash would say "this image appears to be part of a sequence of images, would you like to import all images?" and then you click "yes" and it imports each image and sticks each one on a seperate frame, so you don't have to do anything but wait for Flash to process all 800 images.

Then you export as .AVI, .MOV, .GIF, or whatever you want :)

Flash ain't compatible with Premiere, or at least not with the function I'm using.

Plus, I suck at it.

Use VirtualDub to reconstruct the movie's pointers. Can't remember offhand which function you have to use, but it's there somewhere, I've used it before...
Then you can view it as normal :)

Think I've got a ****in' memory leak or a virus though... I've had gradually less available memory and slower performance for weeks. GIF animator locked up half an hour ago, I was ready to put a brick through the monitor.

Hint: Bricks and monitors do not combine to block memory leaks :)
  • CtrlAltDel, is anything running that wouldn't usually be?
  • Have you run a virus scan lately?
  • Have you installed any software lately?
  • Have you run Ad-Aware lately?
  • Check regedit: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE-Software-Windows-Current Version-Run , also same path under HKEY_CURRENT_USER. Is there anything there that is unnecessary or conspicuously unusual? Do the same for C:\Windows\Startup\, although there isn't usually much that would like to hide itself that resides there.

Eh, I doubt a malicious virus is the problem. Could be one of the crappy movie programs I installed, but none come to mind as particularly suspect (or coinciding with the noticeable start of the leak). Personally, I'm more likely to point the finger at the 20 gigs of MP3s that everyone else keeps on here.

Quite likely... Whenever I open a folder with about 6 gigs of stuff in, Windows starts hanging randomly. It doesn't seem to fix itself either - Microsoft stuff isn't exactly notorious for cleaning up after itself...

Er... if your hard disk is mostly full, your computer will start to fail.

It's 2000 right now, anyway.

Not true.  I ran Win98 on a 320MB HD filled nearly to the brim (had like 10MB left, including the swap file) and it was still like a rock.  (this was back when i used a 486DX4 100)  If you were talking about an early version of Linux, I'd agree with you.
Gargoyles, Season 1.  Buy it, or DIE! :)

Venom: Had it. Doesn't work on my nice graphics computer any more... still runs on my old word processor just fine, but that has issues all of its own. Let's just say that Office XP is worse than most viruses I've had, and that I'm no an of sitting around for four hours while something loads.
