A good portion of Pro's benefits come in the form of plugins, which can be downloaded from the site. The thing is, you need a username/password to access that area of the site - the username/password that you get when purchasing Pro. Quite smart of them, I must admit.

It started out as a project by a company names Mirabilis, based right here in Israel. After it became uber-successful, AOL bought them out. It's still in AOL's hands, AFAIK.

i'm sure that spam message you got was automated... in fact, i'm sure it was, but i'm sure they also don't allow themselves to receive messages

yeah, that was about the time that it became all crap. :p (huge difference between 99 and 2000b, mostly for the worse)

Miranda ICQ can do all of that, with the exception of the IRC bit...but thats what mIRC is for anyways.  Even has support for Jabber. :)  Plus, the memory footprint is MUCH smaller.

A relatively easy fix for the spammers is to just leave ICQ in invisible mode.  Apparently the spambots just check to see if someone's got the "available" status, and if you aren't "available," it skips over you.

Of course, then it's kinda hard to discover if a buddy's online or not...

That, or use clients OTHER than ICQ (like Miranda ICQ). :)  That, or just set it up so that only ppl on your list can talk to you....but that only works for a while.  They even start sending you auth messages.
