Not ATI's fault
Not SoundBlaster's fault

DO NOT BUY the nForce/nForce2 it's got more problems than swiss cheese has holes

get a shuttle motherboard ( http://www.shuttle.com )

I'll quote myself:

There are/were some problems with AGP8x on some mobos, though.

Hardware compatibility is very hard to find out, unless there's been a lot of problems with certain combination. Which is not quite the case with Radeon and Audigy problems.

As you can figure out from the Rage3D's motherboard list posted above, most can run the system fine, while some has problems. You don't know whether it will work like a dream or like a hell, not until you try it yourself. Don't forget that you have the right to return hardware that does not work.

It is true that nForce mobos have had some problems, but there is no perfect chipsets, is there? They all have their problems, seriousness is defined by how much attention the problem gets.

Ice, the best place for looking specs of certain motherboard is to look at the official site. Having SATA in your mobo does not mean that you can't use ATA devices. Most SATA mobos can have 2 or 4 SATA and 4 ATA devices. In short, you can use four IDE devices, all your hdd's and cd-/dvd-drives, while having an ability to add SATA devices later on.

Motherboard is the most important single hardware in your puter, get the best possible mobo and you're set for almost any future upgrades.

Since AMD is now increasing their CPU prices, I'd recommend to look for Intel 875P mobos and new 800MHz FSB P4's. May take a while until those new P4's are fully working and available. Good thing the flaw in new P4's was discovered before they ended up to any customer's hands.

You're digging your own virtual grave when trying to figure our all incompatibility problems people have reported. Just concentrate on well reported, investigated and serious problems.

Last week the prices were increased.  This week there are down even further than before.

It seems like whatever problems there are, they are not specific problems.  I'm feeling more confident about the new system being about as stable as the present one is (and thats pretty darn stable).

You know, I'd take this comment more seriously if you weren't so violently opposed to nVidia...

Indeed. Most people can't take him seriously when it comes to his comments about nvidia.

I don't understand why people can't believe that neither of the two are perfect, both have their strong and weak areas. It is just sick that some people are so strongly defending the other, while completely bashing the another.

the only real reason i bought my 9000 was that it was a fully featured card, and it was cheap

I think I'm getting a new computer: Athlon 2800XP, Radeon 9700, 1GB of PC3200DDR, for AUD$2300. Not sure if I should go for it.

It'd be a 'family' computer. Don't worry about the fact that I'll load it up with games. :D

Thankyou, I thought it was just me that noticed that. I see nothing wrong with supporting a company or a product if it is good and all but to blatantly ***** on one company on every product it releases is a bit, well, childish really.

Unless ATI sponsor him of course then that would be understandable.

AUD...is that Australian.  I'm planning to do something very similar....2600+, 512mb PC2700, Radeon 9700 and I think I can squeeze it in under $1200 Cdn (mind you the Canadian dollar is higher up than the Australian but not by too much).  The other key thing is that I'm pillaging my old computer.

But I bet you can knock that price down some.

I will probably get a new computer in a couple of months but have not really decided on the specifications I want. I never liked laptops much but it appears that one of those might be more convenient when I start going to college. When is that Radeon mobility 9600 card expected to arrive?

If your still a gamer, the desktop is still your best choice.  And if you really feel the need to take notes on a electronic platform, might as well get a Palm and a keyboard for a fraction of the price of a full laptop.

ice is right, i hope you're not paying full retail for most of that... most places you could get a fair chunk taken off the price.... that's how i got most of my gear.... oh yeah, when you do get the athlon make sure the FSB in the bios is 133 instead of 100.. got me the first time.. i thought cws sent me a 1.5 ghz athlon instead of a 1.8
