How can i make beams on renders for ships when they fire on other ships ?
Without 3D max.
Silva in lumine Lunae arcana est. Domos mea Silva in lumine Stellarum est.

you model a beam paint a twexture glow the texture and stuff and dont



i on the other hand use FS2 real beam textures ;) sometimes lol

For lense flares, use Axion Flare Effects in Photoshop.

Got PSP?

Create a new layer, and set its blend mode to screen. Use the paintbrush with full opacity, hardness of about 60, and an appropriate, round size. Draw the circle for the beam with this, one click should do it.  Then use the selection tool to create a rectangle for the path of the beam (make it wider at one end for perspective). Fill this with solid colour, using the same paintbrush.  Then go to selection->modify->expand, and enlarge the selection proportionally.  Then apply a gausian blur, experiment with blur radius.  
Repeat this for the white core, making a new layer for it too.

If memory serves, that starfield came with MAX. Look under \3dsmax\maps\space\ dir. It should be there. :)

beams are reasonably easy to make in PS, i use the same technique to make lightsabers in PS
