Do any exist? I'm talking about something maybe 80-100m long, about five turrets (probably flak or AAAfs) that go fast and are designed to guard convoys?

I mean, it seems a waste to put a Fenris or Aten on escort duty, when a group of two or three of these cheaper, faster ships would work better, and even be able to split up to engage multiple fighter wings.

If noe do exist, maybe it's time i got off my but and learnt how to mod... Maybe.

It's called a GUNSHIP, not a mini cruiser. No one else feels the need to adhere to my classification conventions, but oh well.  

And, the GVFR Satis, GTSC Faustus, and GTFR Chronos (with a special type of armed cargo) have some relatively common gunship variants. That way, the Atens and Fenrises could be heavily upgraded in my campaigns. You'll see how the Aten was upgraded... heh heh heh...

Couldn't it also be called a blastboat? I just think the name suits the concept. Though gunship works well aswell.

Upgraded Atens are the best ever. Even if that only means messing with the weapons in FRED (the extent of my modding abilities).

My campaign features one of these, the GVC Tumenkophf.

BTW, Where can those variants you mentioned be obtained?

The upgraded Atens I'm talking about are more than just weapon variants, in fact their hulls are stronger, and they have 4 more turrets. The upgraded Aten's model is not available yet, but will be, when Winds of Fate (the first campaign of the Eden trilogy) comes out.

Mad Bomber does love his new toys!  

Anyway, I built a couple of gunships a few months ago, before I'd figured out how to use TS properly (back then, I just used segeltuch to stick the turrets on. Argh!). Each one had about half a dozen turrets, and the larger of the two was about 100m long. Maybe I'll dust them off sometime and do them properly.

Escort Cruiser
The Escort Cruiser is a small, lightweight, and slow cruiser designed to protect other ships with its automatic cannon turrets and missile batteries. It lacks any kind of heavy-hitting weapons, as such it is poorly suited for anti-shipping. It is best used as a last line of defense to destroy enemy strike-craft and cruise missiles.

We could use a few of these convoy defence ships. Whatever you want to call them.

Gunship: gunships are the right size but the name also denotes use as well as size and gunships are fast attack craft.

Escort cruiser: not bad but it suggests something a bit bigger. this is the sort of thing that defends destroyers in big battle groups.

In current day navy the ships that get used for convoy protection ( excluding Anti submarine stuff) is patrol craft & light frigates.

you know that in current days, even an Apache helicopter  is called a gunship? basically, I think a gunship is a "thing" with lots of... guns, yeah!!!

According to Jane's Warship Recognition Guide
a patrol craft is a ship of 45 to 85 m.
a Gunship is similar but must mount at least 1 76mm cannon.

in FS2 terms a gunship must mount at least 1 Serious beam cannon ie a Terslash .

A tiny Fenris, you mean? A patrol craft wouldn't be designed to take on anything bigger than itself, and as such, it would probably be covered in flack and AAAFs rather than anti capship beams. They're designed to take on fighters.

Also, while the modern day warship comparison is OK, you've got to remember FS2 is not set on water. There aren't really any fighter sized boats, are there?

Well yeah, a tiny ship the size of a freighter armed with flak and AAA and ONE moderate beam weapon? Long Range Flak alone could tear these guys a new one.

Ever see two cruisers or corvettes duke it out if they don't have beams enabled?

 The Faustus is classified a Cruiser.  It's 168 meters long and is listed that way in fs tech database.  My sparta counterpart of it, witch has larger turrets, (still only 6)  has a reinforced hull and slower turning rate.  It also has no solar sail    They have decent firepower but a FS1 fenris can still outgun it, it is only slightly slower but no more manueverable than its leviathon counterpart.  Early in the T-V war it was redesignated as a picket cruiser and escort.  Many were buildt but decommisioned because they could not hold to a Aten cruiser.  Later on merchants, pirates, and syndicates got their hands on them and by the late 2330's they were the most common type of non GTA cruiser on the market.  The Antares Federation offering its system inhabinets safe haven from the Shivans (neo feudalism)  used these.  However, Syndicate marauders and raiders in packs overcame them as did conflicts with the provisional GTA.

Actually it has the GTSC designation, which I think stands for science cruiser. They said something in the tech database about how it was originally a civilian research vessel or something, after which the GTA started using it for military operations.
