...hit your burners pilot!

Wanted to test fog effects, and what better way than to render this scene... tell me what ya think. Constructive criticism is appreciated ;)

Yeah aside from the obvious contradiction of the Dive3 mission not being in a nebula, I'd work on the following:

Find a better font - either one that presents the ominiousness of the Sathanas (Bank Gothic MD BT is an ominous font IMO, but far overused), or one that brings out the frenetic scream of pilots exiting a subspace jump into the waiting arms of the Sathanas (the font I used in the title of "Vanquished" would do quite nicely, IMHO.

The warmup glows of the beams are too regular. Each one has 8 regularly spaced spikes. The FS glows generally have 2 big spikes along the horizontal, and a few randomly angled smaller spikes.

Lastly, the nebula looks too regular as wel. Perhaps try for different shades of red, as opposed to red and black... think about it. You'd never find a nebula where some parts were black - at least, not on that small a scale.

EDIT: Also, if you feel adventerous, try to make the title font interact with the render somehow, as opposed to just being on the black area. Doesn't need to be anything spectacular - simply blending mode changes can work wonders.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Ah, wrong mission... doh...

Well I remember getting rammed by the Sathanas in the nebula mission where it jumps in, and died. I guess I was in the wrong place at the wrong time :p  And I associated with getting rammed in the nebula to the Dive Dive Dive part. Ah well... :blah:

And Sandwich, thanks for the advice, only have one major issue with one of the points you made. :) If I took out the black, it would all be red, and a pure red background would generate a picture without any sort of depth to it... sure there would be the fog effect but a Sathanas against a pure red background? I suppose I could make it a darker red or something, but there's no way i'm going all red :p

Did I ever say "completely remove all hints of any other color aside from FF0000 red"? No, I didn't. :p All I said was that the black spots make it look like a single see-through nebula layer, thin and shallow. Don't let space show through the nebula.

Great render, but Sandwich's right. Black patches would never appear in a nebula, unless some of the gases present are black, but that would come out looking different again: the gases would diffuse over time and become something like that render of Setekh's that Sandwich posted. It also wouldn't be very nebula-like if it was just a field of plain colour - well, in fact, that might be quite possible, but it doesn't feel right. ;)

Overall,.

why not black patches could be a clear bit through to space - could eba  dense gass not letting light through etc etc etc also the whol concept of a thick nebula is crap they so thin in real life you wouldn't know your flying through one inles you looking at a particle density  sensor and might notice it go up afw partciles per cubic meter nebulas tend to be seen from a great distance cuase of an overall effect locally they are thin

unless you very clsoe to a recent supernova remnant  but thats not techincally a nebula jsut yet and if your in one whn its  still dence hope you got some kick ass thermal sheilding

hm oh ranting nevermind
