Is it possible to connect two computers via the network cards without using any switches and hubs? If no, is there another quick solution? I need to know this because I want to transfer some files between two machines.

Just two ethernet cards and twisted ethernet cable. Not straight, twisted.

No joke. Just use a CAT 5 Ethernet cable.

Ok but do I have to setup any settings to make it work? It's not just plug and transfer right?

It's also known as 'crossover' cable - hence twisted. Go to your computer shop and buy a meter of x-over cable and plug that in to your network cable. You can try and make x-over cable yourself, it's not brain surgery but it's a little tricky.

Then, go in to you network properties and assign each box an IP adress. Easy as eating pancakes.
