I've heard that some people (well maybe , I don't know) use emacs as their home and their life. So I was wondering if any of you linux enthusiasts (I know there're a few of you 'round) are familiar with that kind of emacs-usage (i.e. the never-comes-out-of-emacs type) and if you could tell me some useful/neat/common programs to use in emacs. (preferably easily obtained for debian)

Seriously, I don't even install Emacs (Slackware gives it it's own disk set so it's easy enough to do) I prefer the editor built into Midnight Commander or vi (old habit, you know the ones that die hard?)

Well, I'm not particularly fond of emacs, but I've barely used it so I can't really say. I was mainly using vi but I'm trying emacs now.

it's an editor program for linux, to put it in extreme ways I guess it's a souped up notepad Interesting thing is you can do pretty much everything in linux from emacs, you can view mail, browse the net, program, whatever.

i usually install it but I never really use it. i prefer other editors.

I would imagine Emacs has been ported to just about everything.

It was written by Richard Stallman and was the first program ever released under the GPL but I can't quite remember whether he wrote it as a part of his larger GNU project or as a showcase for the GPL...
