Questions from a Newbie
Hi guys,

It seems to me that the SCP's features are unclear. Can it be seen as an upgrade of the Freespace 2 engine or is it something more?
To be more specific, is it compatible with the original FS2 campaign? What does it change for this campaign? Will the graphics be more beautiful? (I 've read something about laser and shield piercing, was it like this in the original game?)

Are there some projects using the SCP engine?

Maybe I haven't looked in the right place. I searched the FAQ and documents and haven't found answers to these questions: there are a lot of technical talkings (perfect for programmers) but nothing for "simple" players who wants to know what these project can bring to them.

However, congratulations  for this project which seems very impressive.

'Quick, get the welcome beam ready!'

'Sir, the welcome beam is down for repairs!'

'Oh man.....'

"Welcome to the HLP!  Exits are to your left and right, with another pair behind you, quite a way in fact.  There is a flamethrower under your seat, but the chances of it having any fuel is quite low.  Plasma rifles, GEP guns and chainsaws are in the weapon lockers, but only God and the HLP admins can get to those.  If you go crawling into the duct work for any reason, beware of the Shivans.  If your lucky,  you'll only meet Carl.  Give him your lunch and back away SLOWLY.  If its not Carl, well, it will be quick."

I must admit, I've asked about this before, so I can answer a few questions.  Yes, the SCP will inprove various areas of FS2, though you will need to get hold of various map files, and use a Registry fix to use the inproved graphics.

The programers are adding new features to the code, but they can't change the basic setup of the game (ie no 'real' phyiscs), but they can make nice changes.

One of the active SCP'ers can tell you more (and correct me if I'm wrong ;7), I only glance though the SCP forum evey now and again.
...There ought to be something surreal about a Zoid offering romantic advice...and yet there is not. It seems perfectly normal that the Liger is giving Bit advice on relationships, and it shouldn't, but it does. Dangit man, you've confused me again.[/I]

OK - the SCP is a project that utilizes the recently released FS2 source code and the talents of a small group of people who can code to modify and enhance the FS2 engine, fixing bugs, adding new features, and generally fiddling about.

Many of the enhancements so far have been graphical (Glow points and maps, Komets mod etc.) but there have been many more - the addition of new sexps, new weapon types, increased table limits, custom cutscene support and a whole bunch of other stuff.

In theory, everything is backwards compatible with the main campaign, but yes, some stuff would screw with the balance such as beams not piercing shields, as they did in the FS2 main campaign.

There are a lot of projects using parts of it, though the only one that claims to be using it to its full potential is the as yet unreleased TV War Project. However, even they aren;t using some of the features (beam tiling, fighter beams etc.) - it's gotten so big that for a campaign to use all its features would be difficult, to say the least.

Ch;eck out Casualties of war for a recent campaign with SC Modifications - 'tis a good one.

Im gonna use as much of it as I can! (so there:ha: )

I dont think anyone will ever use 'everything' to its full pontential, I mean FS2 originaly didn't even use everything they coded or made for it, did they (right?)
