I've got a new toy!
Well, I went out and got me an mp3 player!   :)  Turns out that Best Buy got in some more Sony players and I found one with a      80 hour battery life, with a remote control...and it came with the car kit!  All for $79.95! (Walkman D-NE51CK)  It also came with software where I could rip songs and encode them either as mp3s, "Atrac", "Atrac2", or "Atrac3". (whatever the hell those last three are.   :p)  I was going to nab the Panasonic player when I happened to see this thing.  The only drawback is that it came with some really ****ty quality headphones, but thats no big deal since I'll use my Koss earbuds anyhow.

ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) is a compression system Sony developed over a decade ago (if not earlier) for it's MiniDiscs. It's more efficient than MP3 as it can store at least 60 minutes of audio at fairly decent quality on a 120Mb (thereabouts) disc. In recent times though, it's become part of Sony's DRM push with many of it's player only supporting the format and requiring everything being loaded onto them (including MP3s) to be transcoded into ATRAC.

I have a Sony minidisc player that you can copy MP3's from the hard drive to it. What really pisses me off about it is that I can only copy a file a maximum of three times, even though every single mp3 I have on minidisc is a legitimate CD rip. I don't like DRM because it violates the terms of fair usage in my opinion.

Yeah, that is pretty poor. My friends complain about that constantly.

The price is right ( ), but the design is crap. Compare:

My $150 iRiver SlimX, ~23 hours batt life, dimension approx. 135(W) X 145(L) X 6.7(H)mm (;7), weight approx. 189g ( Excluding Batteries). :D

:wtf: What're you on?? MP3 @ 128kbps is a meg a minute. 60 minutes = 60 megs, 120 megs = 2 hours. Granted, it's not the same quality as MiniDisc audio, but if you double the bitrate so that 2mb = 1 minute, you'll get the same quality as minidisc in the same size.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Heheh, Venom gotcha there Sandwich :D

True though, are you getting your figures confused or something? If you're taking audio quality into account and you're a real audiophile, Ogg Vorbis offers superior audio quality for even smaller sizes (not significantly, though) than MP3 - at the cost of far lesser compatibility.

Yeah, I know it does, I just never really heard any vorbis songs to compare. But the SlimX is firmware upgradeable, which means that if Vorbis really takes off in the furute, the company can add in supprt for it with no problems. :D

Also, did I mention that I have snakebyte on my SlimX? :D

It's easy enough to get around, just a quick uninstall then reinstall, but I wish they'd implemented some sort of CD check to verify the mp3 came from a genuinely owned CD. Still a fantastic piece of kit though and that's the only flaw I've found with it.
