Community Revival starts with availability...
The very first thing we need to do to revive interest in the mods is enthusiatic new blood!

This can only be accomplished in steps:

1. We need a downloadable ISO (aka: full disc image- not the ripped version) of the original game!!!

If new people can't  get the original game then how can they play the mods??

The enthusiasm of new blood is essential for any community.

The source code has been released, therefore it is now public domain.

Uploading it to a site like "Filefront" would be best as they will burn discs for a nominal fee, for those who don't have burners.

2.  We need to get the "completed" Mods and TC's better exposure and hype

These are flagship modifications and should be prominently displayed.

It not only encourages the development group, but also other groups who are struggling to get motivated.

3. Dead or dying mods need to be dealt with

Having links to dead mod sites, just reinforces the notion the the Community is dead or dying, even if it isn't.

The leaders of dead mods should be encouraged to either release what they have, or at least release their work into a "mod pool" for other groups to use (with the proper credit of course).

If  the mod is truly dead, then it should be removed from any links on active community sites.

4.  The Source Code project should be releasing "packages" or "patches" that can be easily downloaded and installed

This would give the modders the abilty to specify what  enhancements are needed to properly run their mod and where to get it.

The community isn't dead, nor is it a forum for socializing (only), it just needs new blood and new excitement about an already great game and equally great mods.

Well, why don't you start helping instead of telling us what to do? You're fresh blood, get off your ass and help with something. Learn to MOD, make a website, upload fs2 to Filefront...

You've chosen a bad time to post this topic Zinjo. There are at least 4-5 posts on this board alone dedicated to how to stop the rot and save FS2.

What you've posted has either already been posted this week by someone else or is incorrect (FS2 isn't public domain by a long shot. If it was the ISOs would have been up on fileplanet or another similar site within days of the source being released).

Anyway Solatar has the right idea. Instead of telling us what we already know and getting upset when we tell you we already know why not contribute to the community instead?

Anyway welcome to HLP.

What Kasperl said. Only nastier. How dumb do you have to be for your second post to be ****-talking the people who can, and are, solving the problem in much more useful, interesting ways than yours?

I mean, really. Did that just come out because random keys were getting hit while you were gnawing on your keyboard?

Ahhhh, then my bad.

Tho, I will see if I can create an ISO of my copy of Freespace 2.  If it works, I'll need to find a place to upload it....

RE: the ISO, It  probably  still is an owned property, but we will never know if we can make an ISO available, until we try.

Search the damn forums. This has been dealt with.

Hey Zinjo, welcome to HLP :)
OK, let me give my opinions on what you've stated...

1)  OK, saying we need a downloadable ISO of the original game (FS2 i presume?) is one thing, but doing it is another.  you see, the first reason, is part of HLP (Hard Light Production)'s hosting contract is to stay away from anything warez, because that makes the host, 3DAP look bad.  since downloading the ISO may not seem illegal since the source code has been released, as some have suggested, the things INCLUDED in the ISO aren't freeware yet, and probably never will be, so it's not "legal" to download the ISOs per say.  Second, let's say all three FS2 CDs hold 600 MB each... that's 2.2 GB for the entire thing.  If 5 people download it a day, in a 30 day month that's 330 Gigabytes... that's a lot of stress for any server, bandwidth limitations are RARELY in the hundreds...  since most of the HLP community are students and don't have much time and/or money, getting a server to support this much strain (even renting one) would just be out of our limits.

2) True (and/or) no comment.
3) True (and/or) no comment.
4) OK, since the FSSCP (Freespace Source Code Project)'s start, every so often a "release" is released, for the community to test, and use.  Releases can be found at the FSSCP webpage.

There's not much reading there to keep you from repeatedly making an ass of yourself, dude. We've got a modified copy of FS2 up, we're going to add full functionality to it, we don't need an ISO.

There are very few really completed mods. The ones there are, everyone who asks knows about, and if there's a sudden resurgence of membership, other accomodations will come. Right now, and for the forseeable future, they're completely unnecessary.

We've already discussed the "dead and dying mods" bit, and at least one admin has agreed- there's been no comment from the others. We'll see- by this weekend, everything should have started to get rolling, but right now everyone's got **** to do.

And that would only complicate the Source. Right now, it's in one easy-to-use package, great for everyone, and if they don't want any new functions they can just turn them off or not use them. We don't need a huge frickin' song and dance, or 500 separate downloads necessary to make use of half a dozen campaigns.

Drop the self-righteous attitude, kid. If you'd bothered to read the threads directly under yours, you'd know this ****, and you'd know you are not some savior come down to the forum to tell us savages the bleeding obvious, like it's resolving relativity with quantum physics. No wonder you get flames. If all the "enthusiastic new blood" is this arrogant and insistent on remaining ignorant, despite repeated requests to read up on the very thing they're talking about, I vote we request the HOTU upload be taken down.

Now either go join a campaign or help out with the videocapture or something, or just be quiet, okay? I don't not get paid to be bothered by silly little buggers and then called a flamer for not putting up with them.
