Slight history course/ one minute of silence please.

Today, 62 years ago, the Soviet Union transported, on the course of one night, over 20 000 Estonians, well over 2% of the population at that time, to Siberia, against their will. The taken were mainly politicians, teacher, doctors, rich people, core of the Estonian society. Being estonian was their only guilt. During 1941-1949 over 80 000 Estonians, a staggering 10% of the population was transported to Siberia.

Less than 10 000 returned.

Considering about 5000-6000 died on their way to Siberia, that may not have been far off the mark.

Numbers don't matter. Is it any more of a tragedy to one man, if millions die in war, than if his wife alone dies?

It is infathomable to attempt to feel the total pain that could be totalled from all those who lost loved ones thanks to the mistakes of the 20th Century, but each time we remember that it happened we get a bit closer to making sure it doesn't happen again and that those people are not forgotten.
