Actually, I'm glad this was bumped - I had forgotten to complete things. ;)

I'll get to the FS1 movies over the weekend; what's been done with the FS2 movies, anything?

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Someone not a million miles distant from this post converted all the FS2 movies and uploaded them to Fractux's server :D

Feel free to try converting the intro though. The one I converted had a couple of audio glitches at the start and end.

I'll have to see about getting my brother to try it - he has a few dozen GB free. :)

Fair enough. :) You'll need 4.2 gigs free for the Intro. If you get the same glitch as I did you get an audio spike (don't know the correct term) at the start and a little noise right at the end.

Oh YES! Damn, it's nice to see the Hallway Battle again...  Pity about the jerky audio, but that's probably down to two things: converting the video with programs running in the background, and a 1.5Gb file size.

Doesn't Windows XP have a built-in tool for compressing video files?  I can't find it anywhere...

Look for Virtual Dub.

It isn't in windows, but it's out to solve your video conversion problems, moreover it's free.

:wtf:  I converted the hallfight anim, and there was no jerky audio. Are you using the one that was DLed from the link on here? Or are you doing your own version?

Dug out my FS CDs and did the conversion myself.  Thing is, I had my internet connection, Trillian, and four IE6 instances running in the background.  The video ran fine during the conversion, but when I played back the 1.5Gb AVI, the image and audio was jerky at some points.

Is there a tool to convert Descent 2's MVL files?  PM23 doesn't work, and neigther does FSP.

Ahhh... you can't really run those humongous videos smoothly with any of today's computers, I'd guess... not unless it was a super-top-of-the-line rig, anyway. Or maybe not. Anyway, I can't run the big AVI's smoothly, I need to reencode them down with Divx (v5) and MP3 audio before I can play them as AVI's. I use VirtualDub. And IIRC< I posted the settings that got me the best size/quality ratio somewhere towards the beginning of the thread...

I thought all the movies on Silent Threat were already avi files? I guess I need to look at FS1 a little more often :D

I knew my video playing code in fs2_open would come in handy.
Im currently trying to checkin a fix that will let you use it with DX8 again.

If you rename your avi, mpg, divx whatever to be mve and put it in the root of freespace then this exe

http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/fs2_open_r.rar

should detect what it really is and play it. The intro wont play when you go in for some reason but it seems to work nicely in the techroom and hopefully between levels.

Im currently trying to check this code in but I've not got write access at the moment. :sigh:

Huh? I've been using one of Phreaks builds for a while now and it used to play intro.avi every time I started the game. Maybe it doesn't play cause you renamed the file?

Instead of renaming the files maybe if you leave them as .avi and play the campaign using

this edited version of the campaign file the intro will work?
