not so, a lot of people like to record what they've recorded on a camcorder onto a VHS disk, which is completely legal.  also others like to record news bulletins and stuff.  there's nothing illegal about that

some people like to record their own music, or notes and stuff with audiocasettes.  CDs i'm not sure

It's not. In the 1980's, some court ruled it is not illegal to record television shows - but it is to distribute them.

Which brings my question:

Snipes' right. It's not illegal to record TV shows - you can encode them and keep them if you want, even share with friends, but you can't mass distribute them. And acquiring recorded/encoded shows through mass distributions (such as file sharing programs) is also illegal.
