Looks good... but I have 2 things to say about it:

- The nebula is not quite nebula-like. It appears as if space is on fire.
- Lightning is wrong. Though this is done quite often so your not the only one placing the lights wrongly. :p

Make the nebula more "dissolved". Basically, make it spread over a larger area and less contrasty...uhm I really can't explain it that well. As well, you could try putting a planet in the background or something.

other than that, its very cool. I take it the inspiration is that SOC mission where you have to rescue Snipes?

Now all you have to do is kill the ambient light, light the scene properly and you're in business.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

lighting is still fuct. You want the faces that we see to be relatively dark, and the backs of the fighters to be where the light is (because the star is shining on them). Right now, it looks like the opposite.

1. Always disable ambient lighting or not higher then 5%
2. Use shadow maps or raytrace, but shadow maps are just as good and render time is less.

You are improving but there is still much to learn.

ooh, nifty...

but one gripe...

you fixed the lighting on the erienys, but the planet still looks like the light source is next to the camera. Either use a modeled planet, or rotate it somehow to make it look like the sun is on the same side of it as it is the erieneys

Hmm, definate improvement. Try putting a glow around the planet to simulate an atmosphere. Or not, depending on what you had in mind. Try dispersing the nebula a bit. The outer edges of the pic, where there are only stars, look a bit barren.

One other thing you might try, and this really is more a matter of taste, you could try making the yellow bit of the nebula white, to give it more of a "glowy" and powerful feel.
