I frequent many forums, many use vBulletin, many use other scripts, but of all of them, HLP's pages load MUCH faster than any others... why is this? it's not the number of threads or users, so what could it be?  i know many of you don't notice this, but on 56K i do, and if i type forums.hardlightproductions.com, in 5 seconds everything's 100% loaded, whereas if i go to another forum i wait like 20-40 seconds sometimes.  is there some SQL function i don't know about that does this?  i've optimized ours, and i still don't notice a difference.

It does not contain random images the size of manhattan everywhere? Thats the main problem with most forums, that their images are enormous.

i was thinking that, but some forums i go to don't even have the header banner that HLP does, and they have the generic "post new topic" etc. buttons, not custom.

Well, I don;t know about anyone else, but it's loading unusually fast for me tonight. I'm not complaining though

I assume you mean the forums, and not nessecarily the mainpages, correct?

Do a traceroute to the dynamic4 server, see if it's perhaps in the Texas area.

no, not the mainpages, only the forums.  the forums are, and have always been unusually fast loading for 56K.

i know it's nothing to do with the Texas are (you bastard ) because other forums on dynamic4 load just as slow as the others, and even swooh's forums, which is like a mile away, loads as slow as the others.  it's incredible

realize that i'm not talking about loading fast(er) the last day, week, or month... they've ALWAYS loaded fast for me, and when i load other vBulletin forums they take along time!

Its probably because GameSpy typically runs a fairly good server and are connected properly to a fairly reliable (relatively speaking) internet backbone.  Thats probably why.  Forums typically are slow because of the server not having enough juice or the connection not passing info as reliably as its supposed to...OR both

That's interesting... I also find this place pretty fast, but I don't have much to compare it to.

There's good compression on all the graphics. There's no crappy Filter code to process on the index and showthread php files. Gamespy servers have good connectivity. And there's probably some reason why there's a low server load. Maybe some other popular sites got hacked and went down or something, reducing the number of connections to the server.

Also, running vB 2.2.6, HLP doesn't have of the redundant, useless **** that other, newer versions of vB run.

And they've removed the whothread thing from the showthread and index pages, which is a bunch less code to process.
