Using a mod ship with FRED2?
Firstly, let me acknowledge that:
a) This question shouldn't need to be asked, because I have not found anyone else asking it (forum or google)
b) My problem could very well be that I just had wisdom teeth out and the drugs are still running rampant *giggle* (my walls are funneh!)

In any case, I downloaded and played the Inferno campaign and fell in love with it. I'd like to build missions for it, so I slogged through the FRED2 guide. However, I've yet to find any reference on how to add the mod ships and weapons to the pick lists you have available. How do I use Inferno ships and weapons from FRED2?

Note: I dled the "one-big-ass-file" version of Inferno, not all the separate little bits (do I have to do that?)

Again, sorry for the seemingly obvious nature of this question, but I just haven't found this info elsewhere on the net.

I think there is a new version of FRED that is included with inferno that incorporates their ships.  Someone who has actually seen the MOD can feel free to correct me, but that is my understanding.

Provided that Inferno is installed correctly....just open FRED2 and the MOD ships are the ones that are there.  FRED2 does not install anything or reference any files that FreeSpace 2 itself does not reference.  So...the ships and weapons tables that govern 90% of the important ship values are read by FRED2 and FreeSpae 2 in exactly the same way from the same source files.

Just open FRED2.

Also...since the current version of Inferno does not use SCP code to run...its probably not advisable to use a SCP version of FRED.

And for what Thor said, the Inf versions of the exe's don't come out until probably next release, from what I understand.

I don't understand your question, or rather, your intent.

If you want to build INFERNO missions (I did just to see the ships that haven't been story introduced for chapters 2,3 and 4. I just plopped one down from each major group and let them go at it while I watched in awe)... Simply open FRED and make the mission as you would for a normal FS2 mission (all the toys are there).

Now you are asking about a adding MOD ship? TO me that means you are adding an outside ship to inferno (like the GTD Saturn).  Simply add the pof to the model folder, add the ship info to the table file, place any needed textures in teh map folder wnd bingo. A new ship added to inferno.

Weapons are similar, pof (if needed) in model folder, texture in map folder, now this is tricky sonme weapons need maps in the effects folder (why is a mystery to me, I dunno and don't need to know! LOL!)...Edit weapons table and add new entry (and cross fingers you did it right (make backups!))

  I hope this helps you...
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

OK, my exact problem is this: I want to make missions using the Inferno mod, which has been correctly installed with my copy of FS2 (as I can play it start to finish). However, when I use FRED2 (not the open source version), the only ships and guns which are available to select are the ones that are included with FS2 by default.
*******************************************
And now, the conclusion:
I solved said problem by reinstalling FS2, then installing Inferno on the fresh install. I think the problem was I may have downloaded another couple mods/campaigns. While FS2 would happily play the Inferno campaign, FRED2 had a hissy fit and reverted to default tables for ships and weapons(but hey, a Microshaft program woulda just died, so why am I *****ing?) My thanks to all the input  I got from other people \o/

What you describe should be impossible...except perhaps something very wonky happened with tables in the /data/tables directory being red for FRED2 and not being red by FreeSpace 2 when it saw the INF VP file...strange indeed.
