Well, this is my first serious try at a render. The title could be "Return To Base" but that sounds a bit too lame to print it on the image. So tell me what you think about it.

I can't tell what ships they are (I'll guess Perseus or Erinyes by the engines) but I really can't tell.

Other than that, I like it.

Erinyes.

Cool.

Thanks for the positive reply. In case anybody cares, it was done completely in max.

How did you do the engines? I have experimented with combustion but cannot get it to work right. Is that combustion with tendril flames? And for the sun is it a saved lens effect for video post or is it custom? And what version of max are you using?

Cool thrusters:yes:
Don't make any effort.  Just do everything really half-assed.  Thats the american way!!!

I use 3ds max 4.2, the sun is a lens effect no video post. The fire effect fails to create a convincing "stream" look because the atmospheric gizmo is always filled from the center so I experimented a bit and eventually discovered, that a volume light with applied noise looks quite convincing as an engine exhaust.

not a bad pic.

My favorite part, though, is the lone Orion floating in front of the huge planet. I dunno. That just makes the picture for me.

Glad you noticed it, but as FreeTerran said it's an Iowa class ship. This was my original idea for the image, a ship that is several kilometers long, still dwarfed by the gargantuan size of celestial bodies, although it's still a good deal away from even the gas giant's little moon.

Really? Good job. I didn't bother to pull out the magnifying glass. I assumed "Freespace pic" and "distant capship" meant Orion.

I like the planet itself, did you use a map it or a procedural?

I used a map of Venus for both objects the gas giant with the cloud layers the moon with a radar map of Venus' surface.

Call me a dumbass, but what are procedurals, and how do they differ from texturing?
