The Babel effect is named after the biblical tale of the Tower of Babel, in which mankind lost its common language, could no longer cooperate, and scattered. Amazingly, the tale may be not a fable but an oral history of an actual, historical outbreak -- and just one of many. As described in The Babel Effect, similar stories have appeared in folk-histories on every continent and among every racial and religious group since ancient times. A common element in these diverse oral traditions is that the events occur in conjunction with building projects or feasts, which would have concentrated otherwise dispersed populations and provided the perfect environment -- close living conditions, poor sanitation, increased sexual contact, shared food and common sources of water -- for general exposure to neurotoxins or for the transmission of disease. Also consistent is the type of symptoms: failure of social behaviors. In each case, those affected lost the ability to communicate, could no longer act cooperatively, fell into conflict, and fled each other in chaos.
