I've decided to migrate to Open and so I downloaded the zip from Phreak's page, but I'm having difficulties... but not with FS2_open, my problem was with FRED2_Open.  Every time I try the program, I get an error message:

"Fred2_open has caused an error in FRED2_OPEN.EXE.  Fred2_open will now close.

If you continue to experience problems, try restarting your computer."

I'm running WindowsME on an 800 MHz. Athlon tb, 256MB SDRAM, GeForce 2MX 32MB.

On a possibly related note, the FS2_Open exe with this version has an "r" extension, while I've read in another thread that the one included in the downloade from the SCP main site has an "s" extension.  You would think that "S" comes after "R", so is the "S" version newer that Phreak's?

It should be noted that I'm very much new to souce code so some tricks that might be natural to the seasoned users, are likely to be outside my experience.

fred is oftine a generation behind FSO, this is becase no one realy can or wants to work on it, Phreak's build is probly the most up to date one, to see if it is Fred that is causeing this, try running it with only the origonal data, it's usualy an order of magnatude more stable with the origonal data that with mods

_d=debug build (i don't distribute this)
_inf = inferno build

usually when bob build a test exe, he replaces the suffix with something else to distinguish it

most recently _z for the new zbuffer and _s for specular,
generaly if you have something with a suffix, it is unoffical and probly experimental
