As I understand it it's just a tool for creating landscapes not real modeling.

My own personal favourite is Lightwave, since it is almost like modelling in virtual clay. 3D Studio is good, but too technified for me, I'm sure it's simple to use, but it's buried under such a complex looking interface that it's scary, quite similar to Maya in that respect.
Truespace is ok, I'm slowly getting used to it now, but I don't think I will ever grow to love it.
It's been years since I used blender, but the last time I saw it, it seemed to be trying to head down the lightwave route, which can't be bad. I'll have to take a look back at it one day :)

Either way, for modelling it's different horses for different courses, so find what you get on with (and can afford).

From what I have seen of the lightwave interface it looks much scarrier.

LOL Well, I guess it is what you are used to using. I'm not saying that 3DS Max is a bad program, I just find I can do everything faster on Lightwave, but then, I have been using it longer :)

bah, I'll say what i keep saying: if you don't like or are scared with max UI , don't use it :p ( the UI, not max ). Everything on th menu can be accessed via an hyperlink menu that appears when you right click ( or maj+right click, r alt+right click, etc ) in the viewport. Everything, from scaling, moving, rotating, creating a new primitive, drawing a spline, extruding a poly, modifying the keys in the keyframer, etc etc. just a menu with words that opens submenus. Saves muchos time, in fact, half of what I do is done this way ( other half is because I'm used to the side menu, I'gve always done like that, and the right click menu didn't exist when I started with 3ds3 under DOS, and old habits are hard to lose ).

Bryce is a cute toy, but I'd say it was no more than that. If you've got MadBryceSkillz(tm) you can do anything in Bryce you want. If you don't know how to use it yet, I'd skip it, download the TS3 freeware and play with THAT. I'd dodge Blender until the UI changes are made, because right now its scary like my last serious girlfriend--no, worse: its scary like my wife when I TALK about my ex-girlfriend.

I agree with Venom, to a point. What you get out of a 3d modeller is what you put into it. I hate Max, have never put effort into Max, and voila! I get nothing out of Max. I spend a lot of time in Lightwave though, and make a serious effort to use the tools, and so I get things like the Naga and the Andropov and the [Name Censored by order of Department of Secrecy]. Venom makes art with Max. You should use what makes you feel comfortable. Just not Bryce. ;)
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Yeah. TS6 is lovely :D Need to try the UVMapper myself though :)

I've started playing about with LW too but it will be a while before I move away from TS.

hey guys i am just learning.  So certain aspects of things i will be lost on.  Ts5, with truewiew, which i agree is indispensable, and i use lithunwrap to uv it.  for texturing i am using Photosuite 4.mostly, copy and paste stuff, clone some...erase, etc etc etc, you know what i mean.

Well, i think this thread proves, it's not the program, it's the modeller that counts :) I've seen incredible stuff on these forums made in programs I wouldn't touch with someone elses barge-pole!
