I might as well release this...
I was hoping to wait until the release of the RS trailer to show this, but the trailer has been postponed for quite a while, so...

GTI Ashkelon
The result of years of development, the GTI Ashkelon is a reverse-engineered Knossos subspace portal with increased stabilization capability, which has been installed in the Gamma Serpentis system for use in transferring the GTVA to the Sol system, a necessity due to Shivan attack. The GTI Ashkelon, being based on experimental technologies, is a highly unreliable piece of machinery given to sudden equipment failures and collapsed jumps. It requires a full crew of 1000 to operate, and is fitted with a large escape pod and self-destruct system in case of emergency. While the outer ring has a diameter slightly larger than that of the original Knossos portal, the subspace stabilization field only works a few hundred meters outside the central ring area, causing it to have significantly lower capacity.

Does this suck? How about now?

It looks pretty cool.

I was wondering about that smaller aperture in the center; I guess no destroyers or or corvettes are going back to Earth, huh?

(And BTW, it's Delta Sepentis that is next to Earth, not Gamma Serpentis. You might be confusing this with Gamma Draconis, where the original Knossos was discovered.)

Ah- thanks, I can never keep track of all those designations. And no, that's actually a pretty damn big hole. But no destroyers, etc. Nothing bigger than a corvette. Besides, the area around the center is stable, too.

Whats the point of the large metal rods that block half the portal again?

It looks pretty good. I like the 'rough' look: it really makes it look like a prototype. I also like the vastly reduced aperture and its supports.

Venom: the portal is the whole thing, the outside is one layer that to a degree stabilizes the node, as well as providing a mount for the power systems and control station. Most importantly, it protects against sudden changes in subspace which may destabilize the node- since the whole thing still is prone to collapse, etc. The inner ring is more like the Knossos itself, with interlocking subspace generators further stabilizing the node and allowing access. It's effective enough that it's not impossible to jump outside the central ring, subspace warps just become less and less stable as one gets farther from the center, with the node nonexistent altogether outside the outer ring. The little quarter-ring also has a complex task in stabilizing the node, suffice it to say that using the node outside the radius of that is a VERY stupid thing to do.

Mik: Thanks. I wanted to give it that look of mild crappitude, like the Terrans still don't quite know how to use the tech properly...

I remember a mission in Tachyon, in which you had to chase down and recover the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel (That was a classic!).

I'd like to see a series of missions spent guarding parts of this thing with a framework of engines attached as they are slowly moved into position. I can imagine all sorts of people that wouldn't want another Knossos built after Capella.

Other missions could be spent around the new portal itself, where, inbetween fights, you could watch these massive things being manuevered into position (can you do welding spark explosions on command?).

Maybe it would be boring. I would just enjoy it cuz I like to see big things being built.

Er... actually, all I have is it blowing itself up, in the RS trailer (COMING SOON- yeah, right...). I'm not 100% sure how many polys it has, but since the outer ring has some exposed planes I'd need to fiddle with it quite a bit to get it FreeSpaceable. I do plan to use it eventually, but only from the Sol side, where you watch an IC capship take the Sol one down (did I mention there was one on each end- the first would warp the second into position to secure the node?), thinking it to be an invading fleet...

A-1 SUPAR dude!
It's a fact.  Stupid people have stupid children.  If you are stupid, don't have sex.  If you insist on having sex.  Have sex with animals.  If you have sex with an animal.  Make sure the animal is smarter than you are.  Just encase of some biological fluke you and the animal have offspring, they won't be as stupid as you are.   One more thing.  Don't assume the animal is protected.  If the animal has a condom, or if female some interuterian device, insist they wear it.  Help stop this mindless mindlessness.  Keep your stupidty to yourself.  This message was brought to you by the Committee of Concerned Citizens that are Smarter than You are.

Before you go off and get offended, keep in mind I fit that stereotype as much as you, unless you happen to be a particularly hickish American. Hell, the unfair stereotype seems to be holding out anyhow, if the continuing support for Bush's new take on the Red Scare is any indicator...

But that's beside the point. It's the appropriate term to describe them, no? At least, I hope so, I wrote them up with this partially in mind...
