Chat Log, 30 Aug 2003
[14:11] Let me start by apologizing for the lack of structure the last month or so
[14:11] I have travelled about 10000 miles for me real job, and am pushing a closed test deadline for Lore, which means that when i was not travelling, I was neck deep in Torque Game Engione source
[14:12] wow
[14:12] so I have been a bit distracted
[14:12] yeah, LA, Chicago, Indianapolis, back to Boston between each
[14:12] that's a lot of miles
[14:12] lotta time in airports
[14:12] b ut enough excuses
[14:12] I thought England to Wales and back was bad
[14:12] hehe
[14:13] the formal purpose of today, was to get the group back together, say hi again, and see what was standing i nthe way of a formal release build
[14:13] 2 builds I am interested in: the interim build, and then what comes up fopr 3.6
[14:13] *** kasperl has joined #fs2source
[14:13] welcome kas
[14:14] hi
[14:14] am i late for the meeting?
[14:14] isn't version 3.5.4 public already?
[14:14] not with any fanfare
[14:14] the build in phreaks sig is probably most recent
[14:14] since all I got is what, one of the coders here
[14:14] not quite, there have been a few changes since
[14:14] I'll ask him :)
[14:15] I think Phreak's latest is 8/6
[14:15] what do we need for a relase, I think CVS is back to bveing in good shape
[14:15] man, i just wish we could bust into [V] HQ and demand the multiplayer and junk code they left out.
[14:15] I'll get together a crack team of commandos
[14:15] you have dumped a bunch of stuff in lately goob, couple other things have gone in, RT put in the alt-tab fix
[14:16] I'd like to do a version with the speech stuff and a version without
[14:16] I basically need a nod from the other devs for that
[14:16] i hate when i accidently press the windows button...
[14:17] goob?
[14:17] why the deal with speech?
[14:17] seems fine to leave it in
[14:17] need to compile it with that processor tag, and you need the ms speech sdk
[14:17] ok
[14:17] oh
[14:17] can't wait to hear a female vasudan on that thing
[14:17] hehe
[14:17] wait - to compile it, or to play it?
[14:18] compile it
[14:18] gotcha
[14:18] fry posted instructions
[14:18] anything you can think of that would prevent what is in cvs from being a 3.5.5 or whatever number we are on?
[14:18] Wouldn't it be better just to have a command line parameter for the speech engine?
[14:18] 3.5.4, methinks... apart from the specular bugs, no
[14:19] that's what I was thinking
[14:19] why do we need two separate builds?
[14:19] yeah sticks, ultimately it will be something like that
[14:19] I'd say then until that time, we should leave it out
[14:19] well, the build of 8/28 was labeled 3.5.4
[14:19] There's not much sense in confusing the users with two builds...
[14:19] that was a goober build
[14:20] oh, did you put that up as latest release goob?
[14:20] if so, then all I gotta do is post and announce, we'll table speech for now
[14:20] *** Karajorma has joined #fs2source
[14:21] well, sorta
[14:21] if not, then I will update and compile what is in there now and post that
[14:21] I put it as latestrelease, but didn't change the version nor announce it
[14:21] it was mainly for TVWP internal
[14:21] k
[14:21] but that's the latest latest?
[14:22] Is there a place where current bugs are listed?
[14:22] bugzilla if peopel are using it, but it's down right now
[14:22] k
[14:23] that's been a struggle, and fraughgt with issues
[14:23] let me talk about 3.6 real quick, then we can get to other stuff
[14:24] goob, just nod if it's ready, I'll rev it up to 3.5.5 anyway and compile
[14:24] sorry, bit busy
[14:24] for 3.6, the single biggest thing I need is an irc client re-implemented
[14:24] np
[14:24] it's not the latest latest
[14:24] ok, I'll cvs it
[14:24] and rev it
[14:24] for 3.6, the single biggest thing I need is an irc client re-implemented
[14:25] Phreak did a bugfix the other day for specular
[14:25] anyone know anyone who knows the IRC RFC or is willing to learn?
[14:25] starting early are we..
[14:25] I have 2pm est, bottom
[14:25] actually 2.25
[14:25] oh, my bad
[14:25] ;)
[14:26] np
[14:26] anyone know anyone who knows the IRC RFC or is willing to learn?
[14:26] I could probably code the backend for that, but I'm not sure about the ui and such
[14:26] what about kazan?
[14:26] I'm still trying to update the starfield code right now also
[14:26] sticks, before we part company today, we'll get you setup in cvs
[14:27] excellent, thanx
[14:27] kazan provided some SW type code, we'll get to that, but the foundation I need is an IRC client
[14:27] I have some sample VB code I can provide
[14:27] just need someone who is looking for an adventure :)
[14:27] the guy I was going to use is busy with Lore
[14:28] if warpcore is down, that means CVS is down too?
[14:28] no, drevil said cvs should be fine during the move
[14:28] k
[14:28] I have not tried this morning though
[14:29] isn't there some freeware c IRC client out who's code you can steal/borrow/use
[14:29] not in C
[14:29] that I could find
[14:29] check sourceforge
[14:29] ah, didn't think about that
[14:29] seems most people write em in VB or some reason
[14:30] and Java
[14:30] yeah
[14:30] ya
[14:32] anyway, keep an eye out, think about it, etc, we'll use this network for testing, and we have some decent tools available to us thru MGT
[14:32] well ofcourse, why dident I think of this, http://xchat.org/
[14:32] if my coder from lore was finished with his tasks, I'd ask him to do it, but alas, he's behind :)
[14:33] is that c bottom?
[14:34] I'll look at that
[14:34] Sourceforge says its C
[14:34] cool
[14:35] * bottomfan looks at the X-Chat code, and notices that it is infact writen i C
[14:35] neat
[14:35] sweet, that could be the ticket then
[14:36] what do you mean, you have intellectually reserved 3.6 for multi?
[14:37] because I have told everyone that 3.6 would be the one that had some multi stuff in it :)
[14:37] heh, ok
[14:37] so, rather than sound like an ass :)
[14:37] hehe
[14:38] funny thing is, the whole of what is left of the SW ocmmunity is looking forward to 3.6
[14:38] because V is supposed to pull the plug on PXO soon
[14:38] WHAT?
[14:38] long story, kas, I'll show yo uthe emails
[14:38] Heh I haven't been able to get in PXO for months now, says not available.
[14:38] it still works here
[14:39] Odd
[14:39] WHAT THE
[14:39] anyway, we're their only hope (no star wars pun intended) ;)
[14:39] well, only is a bit much
[14:40] but, it's gotten some buzz
[14:40] hehe
[14:40] DOES [V], THQ, Interplay, PXO, or Outrage even know about our progress! CALL THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!1
[14:41] they no doubt have insiders....
[14:41] yes, I occasionally trade emails with V
[14:41] * Ferret locks all the doors and windows
[14:41] can someone contact PXO or V to put a banner up for the SCP BEFORE they pull the plug
[14:41] Just a simple request for the multi build, to have the game make a list of ships destroyed and what team they were on and output it to a file and upload somewhere. Shouldn't be too hard.
[14:41] Tell them to release the omitted code pieces!!
[14:41] I was about to suggest that
[14:42] (Btw, I sent that e-mail to you ed)
[14:42] copyright issues still
[14:42] saw it Large
[14:42] I'll get you setup after this
[14:42] k
[14:42] If PXO is pulled there would be no reason not to release the PXO code right?
[14:42] ok, well, we'll look for an irc coder, see what happens
[14:42] Descent 3 still uses it
[14:43] the PXO code must be outdated, right?
[14:43] and V/Outrage have been very protective of their joint property
[14:43] but THQ has the FINAL word
[14:43] Are we talking complete netword multi code from the ground up will be needed?
[14:43] it's not hard to build it from scratch, just need someone with time
[14:43] I see
[14:43] no, I think the existing multi code is useable
[14:43] Let's take the issue to THQ
[14:43] So what parts are we missing then?
[14:44] Junk code, SW, PXO, multiplayer.
[14:44] IP-to-IP games work with the FSopen sources
[14:44] Large: that won;t get anywhere, this is the best route, we built it for lore in a month or so , so I know it's possible, just need an adventurous soul
[14:44] yes, need a master server and a chat client
[14:44] Junk code?
[14:44] the actual game play is still possible, just need the support pieces
[14:44] so what is the time frame we are talking about?
[14:45] My apologies if my questions are stupid, but I'm a bit out of the look
[14:45] loop, rather
[14:45] that is entirely dependent on how soon I find and IRC guy :)
[14:45] no problem sticks
[14:45] welcome back to the community btw
[14:45] where would the master server come from?
[14:45] hehe, thanks
[14:45] kazan wrote somethign that we could use, and I have some code that we could template from
[14:46] WAIT! Doesn't Kali II host Freespace 1? We can ask the people at Kali II to host for us.
[14:46] So let me see if I understand. We have client net code, but not server net code?
[14:46] looking into that, but I own part of MGT here, and I have some other industry relationships that I can leverage
[14:47] there are millions of IRC D's out there.
[14:47] sticks: we just don;t have the master server or the chat client
[14:47] k
[14:47] now I understand
[14:47] the actual IRC servers are available (your on a dev one, I own part of the company that runs it)
[14:48] cool
[14:48] and I have a few servers on dedicated lines
[14:48] nice
[14:48] nad I have been loggin PXO, so I know what the approximate usage is
[14:48] so I have done the homework
[14:48] wouldn't give kali.net give us the server we need?
[14:48] I have the band, and the machines, just not the time to implement
[14:48] * Goober5000 takes a bite out of his pizza
[14:48] mm..pizza
[14:49] Will the master server be a separate program then?
[14:49] mmm :)
[14:49] * Ferret takes a bite out of his pc
[14:49] yeah, ti would have to be sticks
[14:49] DCC me some Gobber :)
[14:49] stupid windows
[14:49] right
[14:49] what's DCC? :)
[14:49] Kali should be looked into further...
[14:49] sending stuff through irc
[14:49] file transfer over IRC
[14:50] * Goober5000 holds some pizza up to the monitor and punches TRANSMIT
[14:50] I am looking at kali
[14:50] HEY, where'd my pizza go?!?
[14:50] I still need an ingame client ;)
[14:51] FM at planet descent is hooking me up with osme of the kali stuff
[14:51] ive got a problem, keeping up with all the development-info-gathering, split up on like 12 diffrent topics on the forum
[14:51] bottom, are you on the dev mailing list?
[14:51] cause the readme is the last thing i want to touch on before letting peopel go nuts chatting :)
[14:51] is there one?
[14:52] yeah, lemme forward the details
[14:52] you get notified of each commit
[14:52] If you could send the info my way also, ed
[14:52] i shudder at the thought of FS2 on Gamespy...
[14:52] Goober, DCC
[14:52] and the best way to probably deal wit hanythign you missed is to relaese the readme and see who *****es about what
[14:52] I C
[14:52] * Ferret is sick
[14:52] I hate Gamespy so much
[14:52] gamespy costs a couple of grand to license
[14:53] per game
[14:53] * Goober5000 goes to get some more pizza
[14:53] Goobs
[14:53] we won;t be doing gamespy
[14:53] sure thing sticks
[14:53] thanks
[14:53] couple of grand?
[14:53] thousands of dollars
[14:54] auth
[14:54] eee..
[14:54] i know, i was just suprised at the amount
[14:54] ah
[14:54] yeah
[14:55] ok, those were the things i wanted to talk about today, we can open it to anythign else, I'll release 3.5.5 in a bit
[14:55] need to get sticks setup in cvs
[14:55] what's up, DC?
[14:55] need to get the email list setup for sticks and bottom
[14:55] You said something about the readme ed?
[14:55] and need to look at xchat and find a coder
[14:55] *** Karajorma has left #fs2source
[14:55] bottom is doing it, he has a REALLY good one
[14:56] but he is turning it into a couple of versions
[14:56] bottom, wanna run it down for folks real quick?
[14:56] * bottomfan is re-writing all of it
[14:56] Well, the first one was just a fancy pile if info
[14:56] but a good pile
[14:56] :)
[14:56] Is there anything else major on the plate for 3.6?
[14:56] file xfer
[14:56] Im now spliting it up into a fs2_open version and a fred2_open version
[14:57] Goobs, file xfer :P
[14:57] yeah
[14:57] ah it no work
[14:57] I'm not receiving it, though - 0%
[14:57] will upload
[14:57] sticks: nope that's the biggie
[14:57] If I keept in all in one the file would go over 100k in no time
[14:57] prolly because I'm on the web client
[14:57] what is fs2_open_r?
[14:57] sounds like a bobbaue build
[14:58] IIRC he uses the alphabet instead of numbers
[14:58] bob marks his release builds with a _r
[14:58] i think its Phreks build
[14:58] _r means release
[14:58] and _d is debug
[14:58] aaa
[14:58] and other letters for special stuff
[14:58] aha
[14:58] _s was a specular
[14:59] ed, what was the "Announcement: To all hosted project leaders: IMPORTANT" all about?
[14:59] something that was a broadcast for all of hlp
[14:59] we're not technically hosted at HLP
[15:00] so nothing we needed to worry about
[15:00] kej
[15:01] I will try to get us back on track for more formal, frequent meetings
[15:01] again, many apolgies for being absent
[15:01] um, one more thing
[15:01] sure, seems a good time to open the floor
[15:01] shoot
[15:01] my news posting isn't really uptodate
[15:02] living has asked if he could help with that
[15:02] and also, who even looks at the news on the FSSCP website?
[15:02] and there are bad links
[15:02] ewh
[15:02] that too, stealth has been busy, anyone feel like being a part time webmaster, checking links, phop code, etc?
[15:02] well, my school is getting more and more, so i am afraid i can;thelp anymore
[15:02] ok kas
[15:02] living was kind enough to offer help, so, we'll try that for a while
[15:03] if you find more time, come on back :)
[15:03] Im doing less and less school actualy
[15:03] k
[15:03] *** Ryx has joined #fs2source
[15:03] somehow, i think that time zone converter was an hour off :)
[15:03] Inquisitor: still, you might want to talk to Styxx all the same, because of PR
[15:03] k
[15:03] yeah, i think so too
[15:03] heh, prolly because we're on Daylight Savings Time
[15:03] yepp
[15:03] oh yes
[15:03] great
[15:04] wonderful
[15:04] lol.
[15:04] oh well :)
[15:04] goobs did u get my PM?
[15:04] btw guys, you CAN use this channel as often as you want, it gets awfully lonely here :)
[15:04] one question, one of you might be able to answer, is it legal to make a rip of FS, add the SCP, some mods, and distrubute that as a rar or on cd?
[15:05] not really
[15:05] idleing isnt that fun
[15:05] hang on DC, lemme check
[15:05] in irc
[15:05] there is some confusion as to the state of the3 license
[15:05] so long as it's FS2, you can freely give it to friends
[15:05] I am 90% certain Interplay revoked the "copy for your friends" clause
[15:05] ?
[15:05] ****
[15:06] so, do so  at your own risk
[15:06] mmm
[15:06] uh, no
[15:06] any word from RT?
[15:06] he doesn't spend time on line
[15:06] oh
[15:06] since i got TS5.1 i doubt FS2 is going to be a problem is the dutch RIAA bursts in
[15:06] sorry, DC, yes... I'm still learning how to work this =P
[15:07] yeah goob, pretty sure they did, they used an old boiler plate EULA, and all EULA's have a "we can change our mind anytime" clause
[15:07] Ive talked to him about the launcher
[15:07] also, do any of you know where i can stuff a 600MB rar for public destribution?
[15:07] RT is a smart guy, but hard to talk to because of his online situation
[15:07] yeah
[15:07] brb
[15:08] anyone tested the 2.3 launcher?
[15:08] not me
[15:08] me
[15:08] * kasperl has g2g in 20min
[15:09] not me
[15:09] got it, DC, downloading now :)
[15:09] i'm adding a wing of mustangs into it now
[15:09] also, do any of you know where i can stuff a 600MB rar for public destribution?
[15:09] why doesn't the standalone v3.5 not work
[15:10] the 2.3 launcher talks about shader support, anyone heard more on this?
[15:10] bobs cell shading perhaps?
[15:10] I want to sort the Win95 compability issue about aswell
[15:10] or specular?
[15:10] maybe
[15:10] can't help there, i don't have acces to a decent 95 machine
[15:11] nor have I
[15:11] the only 95 box i can find, is a POS without a vid card, and i have nightmares about using the damn thing
[15:11] and it's not mine anymore either
[15:11] DragonClaw - switch to PM, it's getting crowded in the main channel =P
[15:11] i gave it away, but somehow, the one i gave it too thhought i included servicingh too
[15:11] i see it all too much
[15:12] Why doesn't the latest standalone version work?
[15:13] BTW, Ballistic Primary Weapons is a bad name for what it is.
[15:13] oh come on, we've been over that argument too many times :-P
[15:13] we had that discussion a long, long time ago
[15:14] talk to ZB, but do it somewhere, far, far away from us
[15:14] How about discrete solid based projectile primary armament units
[15:15] how aboput you telling me a place to host a 600MB rar file for public distribtuion?
[15:15] back
[15:15] hehe
[15:16] *** ed-afk is now known as EdGardner-MGT
[15:16] ok, I have to work a bit on Lore so I can make this deadline
[15:16] 600Mb?
[15:16] what is it?
[15:16] anyting esle? thanks everyone for coming
[15:17] yeah, full, not very ripped FS2
[15:17] lol, not much happened
[15:17] not true
[15:17] got some things sorted, and reminded everyone we were still alive
[15:17] i mean, only the cutscenes are avi, and the techroom ani's are gone
[15:17] I might be able to find a spot
[15:17] mm
[15:17] please, [email protected]
[15:17] be careful gents, that is questionably legal
[15:18] ok, chat amongst yourselves
[15:18] Lemme get back to you on that kas
[15:18] I'll be on, but i need to get some other work done, 3.5.5 later today
[15:19] ok, i g2g about now, so i hope for an email any time soon
[15:19] cyall
[15:20] *** kasperl has quit IRC (Quit: )
[15:20] "Windows® 95 is reported not to work with this version of Fs2_Open.". im keeping this line in, until proven wrong or right
[15:20] yeah
[15:20] 8.1 and win95 have issues
[15:21] sticks, got your email
[15:21] good plan. I may have access to a Win95 box, but not for a little bit
[15:22] maybe then I can try and sort it out
[15:23] dose anyone know what all the cmd optios?
[15:25] the best list we have is what we have on the forums, and I think you stuck that in the last readme?
[15:26] yeah, but im missing some descriptions
[15:27] Ed, the mailing list?
[15:27] working on it, gotta find the email instructions :)
[15:29] of course, now I cannot find the damn thing
[15:30] one sec, lemme send a mail to the lsit server and get the instructions
[15:32] found ZGoob's requests to join :)
[15:32] ok
[15:32] here it comes
[15:33] I hope, I wonder if majordomo is down whilst the servers move....
[15:34] ed, are you DCCing it?
[15:34] no, waiitng for the email to come thru
[15:35] did you get mine yet?
[15:35] send an email to: [email protected]
[15:35] subscribe fs2source-dev
[15:35] in the subject
[15:35] yeah sticks, got it, gonna set u up in a minute
[15:35] cool, no rush
[15:36] I alwasy put subscribe fs2source-dev in the body as well, cause I can never remember hwo majordomo works
[15:36] sent
[15:36] you may have to try again later today or tomorrow
[15:36] not sure the majordomo is playing nice with the move
[15:36] Commands should be sent in the body of an email message to
[15:36] "[email protected]". Multiple commands can be processed provided
[15:36] each occurs on a separate line.
[15:36] Commands in the "Subject:" line are NOT processed.
[15:37] ok, then i nthe body :)
[15:37] sorry :)
[15:37] That's what I got back :-)
[15:37] like i said
[15:37] I never remember :)
[15:37] hehe
[15:37] tis ok
[15:40] This time I didn't get anything back; I hope that's a good sign
[15:40] Im on the list now
[15:40] Ive got to go
[15:40] c'ya
[15:40] oh
[15:41] Im logging this, mail me if you want a one
[15:41] ciao
[15:42] cya bottom
[15:42] I will post this

Thanks for posting that to the boards, lets me get a chance to see what going on inside the project.

Im sorry I cant join in, its just not practical at the moment.
E-mail is always an option though guys.

I'll be releasing new launcher exe and source soon.
Mostly bug fixes.

The speech stuff I hope to turn my eye to soon.

If no-one gets there first I'll try and put a win95 machine together, that is unless I've thrown the 95 install disc away.
