This thing needs a docking port... How would the cop aprehend the bad guy?

In this case, its just a runabout. Its not for apprehending anyone. Its for basic enforcement duties. I suppose I'll need to do something like a support ship as a 'paddy wagon'. :D

You don't have to if you don't want to, man. But feel free, once I've uploaded the file.

Runabout.zip

There are two files in the zip. The .LWO is the runabout with all lods, thrusters, shields and debris on seperate layers, and in their appropriate places. The .3DS file has the same objects all on the same layer, fully tripled and spread out, so you'll have to do whatever you do to put them back together.

For you american driver types out there, I figure this thing is the Freespace equivalent of a Ford Crown Victoria or Chevy Impala: Its just a civilian vehicle that's been converted for police use. That's why it doesn't have the standard boxy Terran fighter look: its a more stylish vehicle for sales to the civilian sector. It is not intended for much combat. I figure the police version has a small secondary bank loaded with some subsystem disabling missiles, and has rather light primaries built in the pods on either side of the cockpit. Alternatively, the primaries could be in the bit above the cockpit and it could have two slightly larger secondaries in the pods.

[edit]
oh yeah: this thing is tiny. those flashers are probably about half a metre square.
[/edit]

So, what do you lot think? Should I finish it out and get started on a civilian ship pack or Freespace: COPS?

:D

I've always assumed that in the GTVA, space travel was highly regulated by the navy save for backwater systems such as Laramis, and even there they would be using modified relics from the V-T and Great War. (Elysiums or Argos being used to transport civilians, modified Chronos freighters to mine, etc.)

I presume pretty much exactly the opposite, Ace. Mainly because I hate the idea of a completely miltarized space presence. There's basically no reason for civilians to limit themselves to retrofitted military designs. We don't do that for civilian shipping on earth, and we're unlikely to do it for civilian shipping in space.

Besides, it would be so BORING that way.

I think it's somewhere in the middle, mostly depending on location. Your fringe systems, like Laramis, Ross 128, the NTF core worlds (Polaris, Regulus, Sirius), et cetera, are all going to rely on relatively older tech, at least for the civvies. Those places all got pretty much trashed by the shivans/postwar depression/civil war/insert-your-own-reason-here. That applies to the military too, I'd assume, since the NTF was after all using the older tech. (Although that may have just been simply because Bosch was running out of ships to throw at the GTVA.. who knows.)

On the other hand, your central systems are going to have a lot more to trade and a lot more money flowing (esp. if the Shivans haven't run roughshod over them in the past 30 years or so) so you're going to see much more commercial activity and such. Less need to crack down on pirates, too, simply because the military presence is too strong.

Oh yeah, and Mikhael? Your quote is yeah, apocryphal, and the original is by Hermann Goering. He said it to his lawyer, I think, before he commited suicide in Nuremberg. If my memory serves. You should be able to find the correct, full quote if you do a Google. I'm too lazy.
