Promising, but unlike FS2, there is an active Sequel on sale at major retailers everywhere.

I wonder if theres anything worth taking from it for fs2_open.
Given its age probably not, but you never know.

Well, there's one major thing I can think of, although it'd be hell to integrate:  the model animation code.
"I condemn false prophets, I condemn the effort to take away the power of rational decision, to drain people of their free will -- and a hell of a lot of money in the bargain. Now that would be an awsome thing. One very needed IMHO.

On the other hand, moving to some more flexible format could still be the better solution.

If you answered, “Wake up and face reality,” you don’t remember what it was like being a young man. You just go to the next entry in the catalogue of lies you can use to destroy your life." - John Dolan

Maybe not, HW's OGL has always been...buggy.

Buggy?  I'm running Homeworld on OGL and it's perfect. 1280x1024 res, max detail, the works.  Plus, I usually have about 10 Heavy Destroyers and 40 of their smaller brethren when playing a skirmish, so if any bugs were gonna crop up then that amount of hardware on screen would make them very visible.

I literally couldn't make the directx HAL work. I had to go the OpenGL route. Of course, being that I love OpenGL, I consider this an acceptable situation. After all, OpenGL is mostly one-to-one portable straight to other platforms, whereas DirectX, well, you know.
