'One year ago at HLP': a thought about it.
I think this new feature may have a setback:
It makes the one-year old threads easily bumpable without doing any search. Guests may find something they would want to comment, register, and bump up an extremely old thread for his first post. Do you think I am right about this?

There's a warning on old threads that should prevent this I think

Well it won't prevent it a such, but at least we can sugar our flames with a 'you were warned' disclaimer

We had a discussion about this while implementing it, and the warning was found sufficient deterrent. If someone still posts after reading it, he must have a really good reason.

something I never quite understood: what's the problem with bumping old threads? Do they carry some sort of disease? Sounds more sensible to me to bump an old thread than create a new one dealing with the same topic ( and when some dude asks for something, people will tell him to search for old topics  something's seriously flawed there ).

One problem with bumping old threads is that quite often you can read quite a distance down them before you realise that they are actually old (which I tend to find quite annoying).
A bigger problem is that they can sometimes reignite old flame wars.

But one of the advantages of thread bumping is that newbies arrived after the thread had sunk down can write their opinions about the topic it is about.

Disadvantages: Some of you(excluding me, and others who are not against thread bumping) may post 'Why did you bump this?' message. I don't know why is it so disadvantageous, maybe I am having mood for typing :)

Thread bumping was really bad when Setekh was gone; his avatar is really noticable and people would think "Oh Steak's back!" before realizing that the post was made over a year before.  It is also annoying to see the same really old topics float up again and again.  I think that the best way to bring up new thoughts on old issues is to READ the older thread and then post a new thread refering back to the old one with new thoughts thrown in.  Just makes more sense to me.

And if you're just going to quote someone and say "Yeah, I agree" then you are REALLY wasting everyone's time.

It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

well, I don't, so it doesn't make much sense to me ( arf, that's a killer, how to argue with that? :D ) :p

I suppose that can be prevented easily ( say, after a post has reached a certain age, the text in  it turns red, et voila ).

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
