I'm just curious. I just like the names of certain languages, particularly French (studying WW1 for a year was partly responsible for that). You can take into account how easy it is to learn (as we found out a few threads ago :p), how it sounds, how the letters look like, whatever. Try to include a reason. :D

(I only included the languages that popped into my head just then... I'll add another one if you can think of a major one I've missed. :))

well, for conversations, it ought to be English, for reading, English too. and for writing storys,English.

but for making something sound cool, Latin. and for making things look like your smart, write in the Greek alphabet.

btw, when i opened this thread it was about programming languages.

English, cos I speak it.
German, cos it's really easy to read and speak (spellings are pretty much phonetic, so there's no confusion. It's not a very pretty language though, like French is).
Japanese, cos it's really weird (it's not a Germanic language, like most of the others, so you can't really compare it to them - except Chinese, of course). :)

Math, specifically predicate calculus. ;)
For a spoken language I like Japanese, mainly because it's my primary language.

English, because you can pretty much say exactly what you mean to say. :)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Even if you have to take a few more words to say it... *grumbles about the Greeks having four words for distinct type sof love* ;)

I could swear they had five words for love.

The serious answer to the question is Japanese, German and English. I love the melodic, elegant sound of Japanese. German is just terribly sexual to me (I don't know why) so I like it. English... well, English, becuase of its absurd grammar, silly mechanics, foolish spelling and general ambiguity lends itself to mad poetry in a way that I think few other languages can match. Poe's "The Bells" would be fare poorly in another language, I think.

Python and C++ are still my favorites though. ;)

Really? I only know four: storge, agape, eros and philia (however you spell that one).

I can stand up for Python - that's what SPIRE's written in. C++ is FS2's language, right? So it can't be too bad either. ;)

I've voted Russian, as it sounds so bloody great. As DG pointed out in another thread, German and Russian are great to shout in, whether you know what you're saying or not.

Even goodbye sounds threatening.
