ok I'm having a bit of trouble with Freespace 2 (if you didn't figure as much from the topic :P) and was hoping someone here could help.

I just did a fresh install of Freespace 2 and installation and configuring things inthe launcher goes all right, byt when I start the game it just starts to load and then minimizes and gives me this error message:

Error: Could not load animation cursor for the mouse pointer

File:C:\Projects\freespace2\code\FREESPACE2\Freesp
ace.ccp
Line:7012

Call stack:
-------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------

I searched around here and didn't find anything that was similar to this :\
I did find a somewhat similar case on the volition watch boards however
http://www.hard-light.net/vwbb/showthread.php?threadid=9336

I get the error in that thread also, along with several other, though they don't show up always, the one above in my post here, I always get though.

My specs are:

Windows XP Pro Edition
Geforce3 TI200
512 DDR ram
Intel Celeron 1.7ghz

That's a new one. Did you do a full install? I'm not sure where the game keeps the mouse cursor, in a VP with the other anis I'd guess. If the file isn't in the stuff you chose to put on your hard drive, it should be read of your CD - is that scratched at all?

If you can spare the drive space, reinstall and make a full, 1.3 jigabyte installation

Oh, and beware of spammerz bearing beams

yup did a full install, and the disc aren't scratched, mostly since they are isos, of the cd's =/
Some bastard stole my discs and fortunatly I did have backup isos....

And also the path at which the game seems to be looking for the file isn't the path to which I installed the game

Don't worry about the path. FS2 will do that when it crashes regardless of where it is installed. That isn't the problem.

It definately appears as though FS2 can't find one of the files it needs. Have a look at my FAQ's techical page for a list of the .vp files you should have. Check that against what you do have. If you have any differences that's probably the cause of your woe.

Righty, you will find your missing cursor.ani in the Sparky VP, under the interface category. Try extracting said file to your FS2 directory root (see Kara's FAQ on getting the tools for the job i.e. VPView)

hmm....something just hit me....considering what you said, and looking in my FS2 root dir.
The root dir contains ALL the *.vp files, and the the whole \data dir is empty except for the "freddocs" and "players" folders...
is that normal or could that be the cause?

Offline diamondgeezer

Nope, cos ths stuff higher in the directory hierarchy supercedes the stuff lower down. Suff in the root takes precedence over stuff in the data folder, see. The data folder is only really for your own custom stuff

drat :P
hmm...well I'll try extracting it from the .vp file then and see if that works.
I have all the .vp files that the faq has listed, so that can't be the problem

Yeah I think thats the case, with only the sparky.vp
I can look through all the other vp files just fine using VPVIEW, however when I try to open sparky....I just get a LOOOOONG list of cubes where there should be filenames and under "type" it just says "? "

Have a look for the Freespace FTP thread on this board (or in my HotU FAQ) and download a copy of the .vp then.

already doing that ;)
saw the thread, seemed internesting, and when I found out that the vp file was corrupt, I started downloading immediatly :D

edit:  well getting that file seemed to fix it, except that the intro movie cuts right after the "presents" text has appeared, else than that it works fine :)
Dunno about the other in game movies yet, but I guess I'll find out soon enough :p

" except that the intro movie cuts right after the "presents" text has appeared, else than that it works fine"

If you got your ISO's off of suprnova.org, the intro will do that for some reason, but the rest of them will work ok.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Yeah, thats where  got them....seeing as one of the vp files was corrupt, pherhaps the intro movie might be corrupt also, I don't really know yet, since I haven't tested the other ones yet, since the graphics are a little bit...screwed
Gonna download the hi-res vp file when I get the chance and see if that'll help, or I'll just use a rip of the game and insert the whole files and see if that works better :)

How exactly are they "screwed"?

The briefing video stuff are sort of split over and seems jagged on the middle....kinda hard to explain really......
And the text looks fuzzy, but I'm not at my own computer now so I can't get a good look of it + I have a horrible memory so I'll check back when I've looked at it a bit more

The fuzzy text is a known problem. It can be solved by changing a registry setting (either use the FS2_open launcher or have a look in the technical section of my FAQ).

Someone also posted a copy of sparky.vp on Suprnova too.
