New Campaign spooling up...
Howdy all ;)
I've posted a couple threads earlier about my models and a storyline I was writing up.
Well, I finished up the storyline, and the models are going along at a decent clip, so I figured it was time to ask for help.
I was hoping to have some more done by the time I posted this, unfortunately, however, all I can do are models, as FS2 won't install on the current PC I am using (discs are scratched :(). So, then, here we go:

This is NOT a regular-campaign FS2. In fact, other than using the game engine, it has nothing to do with Freespace. It's a completely different universe, about 200 years in the future, with China, the United States, and the European Union being the three main powers in space. The storyline is completed, but most of the stuff happens in the campaign (no real prequel story, other than basic history).

Ok, basically, about 120 years into the future or so, we develop hyperspace technology. This allows us to spread throughout the galaxy. The US develops it first, followed by the EU, and China steals most of the tech from the US and the EU, while filling in the blanks themselves. The campaign starts off with China, with the least able technology, rolling out with a SUPER top-of-the-line ship, the Tsi Yuen. Obviously, this raizes some eyebrows. So the US and EU conduct operations, deep scans, etc, on the ship. They find nothing wrong with it, or the publicly released blueprints. The US, however, is not satisfied with the scans, and the blueprints seem a little...strange. So they conduct further investigations...

That's all I can tell right now. Like I said, most of the stuff happens IN the campaign, not a prequel.

If you're interested, PM, IM, or e-mail me. Thanks! Right now what I'm really looking forward to are mission designers and tablers. Actual ship models will come later, but I want to get the gameplay and missions down first.

Thanks!

UT, you know I support you wholly in this, but I just want to make sure - you do know that HLP officially discourages this sort of thing given the circumstances?

:p You know that's not what I mean. With all seriousness, I'd rather if you didn't choose this, UT, but if you've thought it out then give it your hardest and I hope you succeed. :)

I've been meaning to do exactly that story (more or less) for about 2 years.  But i never had the time, because i couldn;t cut the demands down to a managable amount. :)  i made the Scimitar as a style-test for it, asamatteroffact.

Think I've still got a bunch of techdocs lying around, though.

Nice idea, UT - I'd like to see where this goes. I'd offer to help with the FREDding, but I'm on four projects already, so I couldn't really contribute much time to it. If you're really desparate, then I could do a mission or two, but no more (and it'd take a long time, too). :)

Thanks for the encouraging words all :)
Since I haven't had too many volounteers for the full campaign as yet (:()), I've decided I'm going to do a demo mission, with a few new models, etc, just to show people the gameplay aspects of it. Hopefully, I could get that released (but I'd need help from you guys, as I don't have FS2 on my system), and it'll drum up some volounteers for the main campaign.

Aldo, could I use and maybe modify some of those tech docs?

And pyro, would you mind making the demo mission? It's real easy, all it is is a "go kill the bad guys" with a really big battle. Just shows off:

1) The style (yes, maybe 1 Chinese [done, needs textures+pofing], 1 EU [sorta done, needs textures and pofing], and 1 US fighter [done, needs textures and pofing], and maybe also a cap ship for each side [probably only one cap ship, probably for China, tho]).

and

2) The gameplay. I'm planning on altering significant portions of the FS2 gameplay. One of them I'm really looking forward to, and hoping to be able to balance, are a more realistic terms with the missles, and the primary weapons ONLY include guns, with limited ammo. So you could shred a fighter in about, 50-100 hits with a 20MM cannon.

It's gonna give a nice, general showing of all the stuff (besides storyline) that's going to be in the campaign :)

I'm not i have them anymore...I have a nasty feeling I deleted them when I cleaned up the Reci site  a few montsh back.

But if you want any of my ideas on a specific area, I can still remember 90% of it.  I think my basisc model idea was that each faction would have 2 capships (a dedicated carrier and a smaller, also fighter carrying, frigate), a bomber and a fighter class... with a bunch of other models for stations and to represent the neutral Arab & African factions.

In terms of history, the US & South America were allied.  Europe (EU), and Russia formed the second group, and the third was China, Jaspan and most of Asia.  The idea was that a massive series of wars had forced these nations into space to survive - the likes of the Arabas, Africa and Austrailia survived relatively unscathed and had become the relative economic powerhouses on Earth.

The basic design synopsis was that the Americas used bulky, heavy ships, whereas the Europeans had more streamlined, fast and effecient but less well armed and armoured - and the Chinese were of course rickety, cheap but stupidly fast and used in large numbers.

Weapons were yer bog standard machine guns and missiles, with carriers having a single 'superweapon'  -a beam, laser array or a missile launcher firing asteroids.  The actual battles were intended to be basically about securing vital supply depots, or trying to disable enemy capships and thus prevent reinforcements.

Um... engines - the idea was that they used a subspace-ish method, using a gravity based thing that made travel fastest near a sun (and hence limited it to within the solar system - no other stars).  The likes of Mars, etc had small colonies but no major industrialisation.... i think I had a few ideas for near-planet missions set close to domed and turreted installations.

I think this was to setup the 'endgame' - basically the race to capture a derelict ship in low atmosphere around Neptune, which was the first ship to make an inter-system jump, but got lost on the return.  Or an alien monolith / ruin, or something else - I never decided on exactly what, beyond that it would become a focus for the war.

Er... that's about all the specifics I can remeber.  the only other thing would probably be an idea to have missions targeting a surface installation from Earth - basically using long range weaponry to target a superbeam turret which was capable of defending the enemy against space attacks.  And that they'd be 3 short campaigns to tell the war from each sides view.

Some of your ship ideas, like the ship styles (big and bulky, sleek and fast, etc) are similar to mine, but otherwise the storyline is completely different :(
Good idea with the missions, tho, I might use it in the sequel, if this one is ever finished :D (yea, I planned for one).

Weapons are also pretty similar, too. Guns and missles :)

Oh, and thanks Setekh. ;)

EDIT: Karl, I had to figure out how it would work, that's why it's so low/high. Fighters in the atmosphere are hit until that can't maintain enough lift to fly. In space, there isn't this problem. So I had to think: hmmm...how would a ship die?
So i thought that all the rounds are either HE or AP, and they can either breach the reactor or kill the pilot.
They could also ignite the fuel loads on some craft, such as the Chinese, or, to a lesser extent, the US (explained below). This could be done as a small, hidden subsystem that takes about 10 hits to destroy, which then destroys the ship.

The Europeans burn their trash, and gather and store electrical energy and collect stray particles in space for their fuel.
Chinese use a rare gas found only in gas giants and nebulaes for their fuel. The US uses a theory designed for real-life application that I thought up myself, where they use hydrogen gathered from ice planets/random particles in space/nebulaes/stars, which are expelled then exploded behind the ship.

That's why the US and China have intakes (to replenish the fuel as they're flying), while the EU do not.

All cap ships, I'm thinking, use either, in the case of the EU and the US, fusion drives, while China uses (except for the Tsi Yuen and it's accompanying ships) old-fashioned fission drives. However, they have multiple amounts of them.
