I am quite happy with the JPEG standard. Now, when you start out rendering, you will compress everything with ridiculously high-quality settings, because you are so concerned about how much you'll compromise of your pretty little render - that's natural for most people. I had to shake myself of this when GS told us that we were taking up too much space on the 3DAP servers.

What I did was get one of my nicest renders and saved it at
every compression level PSP will allow you (or in 5% increments, whatever is sensible - enough so that you get about 20 or 30 differently compressed images across the range). I named them according to their compression levels (eg. render_100pc, render_97pc for 100% quality & 97% quality respectively). Then get one of your friends to rename all the images randomly, ensuring that he notes down which is which. Then you sift through all the images manually, deleting all the ones you deem to be "too low" in quality - according to your eyes only, at zero magnification (so you can't zoom in and cheat). Then, once you've rooted out all the ones you think are too poor, get your buddy to rename them back. Pick the one which has been compressed the most and you'll often find it is a lot more heavily compressed than you give it credit for. And that will be your standard compression rate, or therabouts.
