Actually the light pollution is that strong, it's just that the camera exposure (plus the contrast of the bright Earth and otherwise dark space) used for space-pictures doesn't pick-up the Earth lights or the background stars. That's why video footage in-orbit doesn't show the background stars, but astronauts do state that it's the best view of the night sky anywhere.
