PUtting FS1 Textures in FS2 + reg hack
I used Karajoma's FAQ as the instructions to do this.  I just want to know if I did this right.

I used vpview to extract from the maps directory of the freespace.vp from freespace 1 all the maps in there and put them in my freespace2/data/maps directory.

When I did that, I didn't get any message that it was going to write over any existing file or anything so I'm not sure I did it right.  Was I supposed to get a message that I'm overwriting files?  How does FS2 know to use those textures instead of the FS2 textures?

The SCP launcher has the "use large textures" checked, but I did the registery edits from the FAQ just in case.

I went into FS2 not knowing if it worked or not and went into the techroom.  I didn't really notice a difference.  I didn't try it in game, but I figured I'd see it in the techroom.

Did I do anything wrong?

You're not looking close enough. The textures are more detailed, but there are no hi-res FS2 textures.

The easiest ship to tell the difference in is the Fenris/Leviathan.  Take out the "new" textures and look at it, then immediately put the textures back and look at the Fenris again.  It it much prettier.  :V: didn't put the higher detailed textures from FS1 in FS2 for some reason.

*Edit*Someone really needs to give us the :V: smiley back.

You did it correctly.

Short answer.
FS1 & 2 keeps their textures in the .vp files but uses anything in the data/maps folder in preference to them. On an unmoddified version of FS2 the entire data folder is virtually empty.

Long answer.
Have a look in the directory structure part of my FAQ to see the explaination in full.

True, but it's not immediately visible in the tech room.
