Rumor has it that Jackson and his merry band of travelling idots are heading back for some more filming, which the intarweb community seems to assume must mean the Scouring.

I might be able to live with the cuts if he doesn't add any crap like the falling off the cliff bit in the last one...

That's a really bad rumor, then because the movie has to belivered for copying and distribution 1 month before the premiere at the latest. That would give PJ a whole week to do the scouring. :doubt:

There was only one Smeagol but there was more than one Balrog. Whether there should be more than one left by the time of the war of the ring is another matter :D

Ok, heres my opinion:

1.Peter Jackson has done a fantastic job at creating an amazing world for LOTR to take place in. The scenery, the battles, the characters, the costumes, the weapons...everything is oh so right. The visuals are out of this world, and barring thr invention of 3D cinema, I doubt anyone will ever do much better than this.

2.The parts that he has done, he has done rather well. A few major things have been changed there, but if the books were just those parts I would be much more forgiving. Well, except for the whole Arwen deal, which is going to freaking far for no obvious reason. If it (the expanded role) is, as I think, only to accomodate Liv Tyler's ego, then you could just as easily hire another actress who would most likely do a better job at acting the role.

3.He has cut out far too much. Yes, I understand that a movie can't be 6 hours long, but without the parts that were cut, you don't get the full exprience. The cuts were made to accomodate the casual watcher (aka the unwashed masses, aka the Harry Potter crowd), because I can almost gaurantee that no one who has read the books would mind an extra 1/2 - 1 hour for each movie. The more, the better. And if you are the type to get bored by the greatest fantasy story ever told, then you quite frankly don't deserve to be watching. This may sound fanatical, but its like the London Symphony Orchestra adding turn-tables to their line-up in order to draw in the younger crowd.

Without having seen the last movie yet, I have actually enjoyed the first two alot, and I don't think I'll be overly disapointed. The movies have been "very good" as opposed to "excellent", so its not like its a catastrophe or something. However, one day, when I get rich, I'm gonna remake the LOTR trilogy (not to mention the Hobbit and the Silmarillion (that would be like a 20 hour movie)) as it should be.

Well, that was my little rant, now I'm off to [l]stalk Peter Jackson[/l] watch the Two Towers again (no, I am not a wierdo, this will only be my second time watching the movie, the first was in theatres)

Do yourself an enourmous favour and go out and get the books. If you find them to be too bland (I seriously doubt you will) then go out and get the Silmarillion. As far as I know, there is no modern fantasy book that even approaches the scope of the Silmarillion. Basically, its like Tolkien inveneted and entire new world, complete with gods and nations, ethnic groups and myths, everything...everything.

Summary: Starting from the creation of Middle-Earth (or more correctly, Ea) The Silmarillion spans several thousand years and introduces you to the world as it was in the old days. I really can't sum it up in a few sentences (or a few pages) but the cast of characters is much more epic, such as Gods (Valar), demi-gods (Maiar, such as Sauron), Elven kings (very cool, tres powerful) and tons more. The best description would be to say thats its many times more epic than LOTR or the Hobbit. Go buy it...now...

Oh and, as far as I know, the one in Moria was the last Balrog left alive. If you think about it, there isn't any place else left for them to hide (well, maybe in the North or in the Blue Mountains)

Yeah, the Silmarillion is the Middle-Earth bible. I'm not kidding. It tells the whole history of it and in a fashion reminicent of the bible. Still a good read though. But thats one book NO one will ever make a movie on.
I have returned... Again...

Why not? There've been plenty of movies made from Biblical stories...

Maiar are demi-demi-gods

Not exactly. Eru Illuvatar is the all-father and is the guy that runs the universe. He makes all the rules. The Valar are gods, but are more accurately called the Powers. They are those of Illuvatar's children that went down to Earth to govern it. They have huge power in Earth, but their powers and their fates are bound up in it. The Maiar are angels - messengers and servants of the Valar. Lastly, the Balrogs are demons, of the same race as the maiar but of lesser power. And that's how it's done.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Well the Valar are gods in the way that the ancient Greeks had a pantheon of gods.  They are the greatest powers on Middle-Earth, excluding Eru, who is not really bound to Ea.

Slightly OT, I for one for really love to know a bit more about the 2 Istari (Pallando and uhmm..another guy) who traveled into the East (Harad) to do whatever. For that matter, I'de love to know about Harad and Umbar and the people there. Unfortunately, death is permanent so it looks like this will remain a subject for anyone wishing to do fan-fiction.

As for the Silmarillion, it could be done justice as a 3-5 part movie series. Just think of all the possibilities..the fall of Gondolin, the War of Wrath, Fingolfin vs Morgoth

*drool*

Offline diamondgeezer

Yes yes yes indeed, a series might do the Silmarilion justice. Each major bit in its own episode with some of the minor fillers jammed in around them. Though how you'd realise the music if the Valar I don't know.
