Multiple Squadron Badges?
Even though I doubt many are using them, is there a way to have Beta and Alpha, and Gamma, and etc, use different squad images? Like if each wing were a part of a different squad? Or is this already standard? I'm not sure.

And this part belongs in modding, but:

How do you get a custom fighter/bomber model to have a squadron image? Is it based on a plane, offset from the hull, or a special texture on the hull, or...? What?

Is that FRED Open? Because I've never seen it before either...

No, normal FRED.  It's how the NTF fighters have that funny scorpion logo.  I can't open normal Fred anymore, but it's in the same place.

It's not much of an excuse for a website, but my stuff can be found here

No, unfortunately, it isn't. At least, not that I can see - I tried the players wing, non player wings (both hostile and Friendly). Wasn't there.

Are you sure you're in the wing editor dialogue and not the ship?  That could be it... I'd check stock FRED if I could get it to run.

And by the way, when did FRED_open start taking 88Mb of system resources to run?

I'm positive it was the wing editor. I seriously doubt that this feature is available in FRED standard - not to sound arrogant, but I've been FREDding/playing other people campaigns for awhile - I think I would have noticed it if it was as noticable as it is in that shot.

And FREDOpen's been a RAM hog since pretty much day 1 Phreak, 'tis the major reason I can't use any FRED/FSOpen builds. I only barely managed to get FREDOpen to run (and I do mean barely - literally about 2  minutes of FREDding) in 224meg of RAM, and this was way back in the days of 3.4/3.5.0

224MB?  i justed opened a pretty decent sized mission up (about 50 ships including some capitals) and it was only taking up about 35MB.  Oddly enough i did this 3 times and once it took 114MB.  Something fishy may be happening

The Wing Squadron Logo was a FRED2_open addition sometime around 3.5 or 3.5.1.  It is not available in retail FRED.

It's set in the insignia tab in PCS. They're rather annoying to do however.

I thought I remembered seeing Kazan say something about it being interpreted directly from the model during conversion, but I'm probably mistaken.

IIRC, PCS' autogen thing for insignias used a UV-ed plane subobject (with lights glued and a specific name) for an insignia point.  I only tried it once (with a version of the Berserker) once, though, before i decided I couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

Retail FRED lets you set sauqdron insignias globaly for fighters on the player's side. The option is in the Mission Specs menu. You can also specify the name of the squadron, and these changes will take effect when the player plays that mission in a campaign (ie. the logo etc will show up in the pilot screen in the barracks).

As for the actual physical placing of a badge on a model... I've heard nothing but horror stories...
