hey all, here's the deal. i've downloaded everything to run fso3.5.5 and i get this stupid error messege saying error intailizing direct3d whenever i run fso by itself and through the launcher. i have no idea what this means and i don't think "intailizing" is a word in the dictionary. can anyone help me out?
my specs are
P3-500, nvidia riva tnt2 model64 pro, 128mb memory, directx8.1, fs2_open_r.exe, launcher 3.0.

i really really want to see lightspeed's work and all the other cool stuff you guys did in SCP. i'm on the verge of putting my fist through my monitor (i know, high unadvisable). so yeah, anyone, someone please help me out.

i had this problem too.  the solution is to find, download and use the latest launcher for the first time u run fs2 open 3.5.5.  i would give u a url but i don't have it anymore.  but this should point u in the right direction

yep i have the lastest launcher, version 3.1. what exactly do you mean by configurations? like the graphics stuff or the command line stuff, or the registry stuff? cuz fiddled around with that stuff already and it still won't work. on the videocardFS2open string in the registry, what mode do you have it? mine says d3d8-(640x480)x32 bit. my video card string says direct 3d - primary display driver (32bit) (1024x768). and my video api says direct3d8. are all those the correct setting for using fs2open 3.5.5 in direct3d?

not sure.  i used the launcher 2.1 to get fso 3.5.5 to work, using 1024x768x32 res in the video tab, startgame in the comm line, and in the top box next to the browse button i have selected the fs2_open_r.exe file selected.  if this helps any??

where do you get launcher 2.1? i downloaded the first launcher and it obviously didn't work. this is really frustrating...

i found the link in the scp forum.  when i was looking for the answer to this very question.  http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,17284.0.html all the files u need are in this forum.  even the launcher for fso 3.5.5, and just for your futior reference this type of thread should be in the source code project forum, as fso is made by the people at the scp.  anyway this should get u out of trobble.

Someone on the SCP team misspelt 'initialising'. I blame Bob. What video mode are you trying to run FSO in? Have you tried DX5?

dx5 is no longer supported -- im not sure if 3.5.5 supports


run dxdiag and tell us what dx version you're running

Ther launcher will throw up an error if DX is not up to date.

Could you let me know what D3D8_Adapter and D3D8_AAType are set to? Also save your D3D caps (using the Video tab in the launcher) and send them to me (email address in profile). I'll look into this for you.

You could try using a more recent game exe: http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/fs2_open_r.rar

And OGL is always an option.

ok, my d3d8_adapter and d3d8_aatype are set to 0. and i get this funny error messege saying "failed to genereate caps, please report to coder" whenever i click on save text caps. but a save window will still open up. i'll send you the caps now. i doubt is has the correct info you need though.

Crap, this sounds very much like a problem someone else had recently. It turned out to be more of a driver issue but we're not sure what actually caused or fixed it.

I would give the newer exe I gave a link to a try. It might give a better error message, at the very least it will be spelt right. Only problem is its a between build exe and may have one or two bugs in it.

I had a look at the caps but your right, because of that problem it didnt give me much info.

3.1, where did you find that?  The latest I've heard of is 3.0.

yeah, go c&h. um now what do i do? just sit here? and deprive myself of freespace? i've already reinstalled fs2 and it still didn't work. got any ideas? yeah i've downloaded the new  exe. it still hasn't worked but it's error messege makes more sense. initializing is still spelled wrong steak.

I just made an update to the exe, I doubt it will fix you'r problem but the OGL will probly be better
