Adding a texture in the middle of another...
How can I put a new, small texture in the middle of a repeating one, without it showing up in each part? in other words, I want to put a texture on the side of an orion, (the side that would be opposite the nameplate)... I have lithunwrap, and the texture... Anyone have any instructions on how i can do this?

You would have to inset a section into the Orion model that would be mapped in a different texture.  Lith by itself probably won't cut it.  If the section you want to change just happens to be one or two polies that contain exactly one repeat of the texture then it may be doable, simlpy by swapping out the texture there, but that's probably not going to be the case on the Orion.

actualy I think you can add very simple primitives in lith, like a plane, wich is what you would need in this situation. however I don't think lith would be very helpfull with anything after this point, it's unlikely to save directly in a format relyable for FS conversion

I think what you want to do will require the additon of an extra poly in the place you want to add the new tex. A very simple operation even in TS, but bear in mind you'll have to jiggy with the UV mapping...

You could do something like a Squad logo over the area you want this thing to go, making sure that you only put the polygon where your new texture is supposed to go.  There's nothing saying that FS's z-buffer issues will allow this to work though, so you almost have to actually edit the model's proper geometry.

It wouldn't actually be a squad logo, you would simply create an additional plane over the spot where you want your custom texture and map it on.  That's how squad logos are done too, in theory (although I still haven't seen one that works correctly) However, as I said before, the poor z-buffering of the Freespace engine may nullify this suggestion.

It would literally take about thirty seconds to put the poly where you want it and rejig the geometry around it

Psycho did a primative version of the texture replacement system FS2 now has. He simply made a textures with the squad images he wanted and replaced the default one with them whenever he wanted a non-default nike. Basically the same thing that [V] did in FS1 with the Galatea and Bastion.

I can easily do the geometry, and I'd volunteer to do it for you. But you see when you adjust geometry you usually have to reset the UV maps, and I suck egg at UV mapping. So it's unlikely I'd be able to get the textures looking the way they were before I fiddled with them, see? That's the tricky part for me :nod:

Yeah but that's not exactly profesional is it? I know that we can ignore most of the rules what with the new SCP builds but it just feels better to build a solid model. And Hippo, if you use Krackers' method, vanilla FS2 won't appreciate it.

Oh hold on... is this for FS1? In that case it's definitely not a good idea since you're liable for all sorts of dodgy clipping issues...

stop useing FS1, use FSO, it is superior!
make the poly (s) in a seperate subobject that way they will always be drawen after the hull of the ship

All I'm saying mate is that rough hacks are not a good idea when it comes to geometry with something as delicate as FS2. Without HTL you'd get horrendous clipping doing that, and even the latest build are not 100% clip proof...
