Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

Why do you even visit those foul boards? Any AOL forums would probably have some of the worst people on the Internet.

Switch to another ISP. There are many, many ISPs that provide better, faster service for less money. And they don't have forums filled with AOL users.:p

And most importantly, they don't make you use AOL.  That is by far the biggest reason not to use them.

I still remember a couple of years back where it was "the internet" provided by AOL and the real internet, where the former was a small and pathetic subset of the latter.  Seeing one of my dad's employee's face when my dad typed in an actual url, and the browser actually went there, is proof of that.  I have avoided association with AOL users since then whenever possible, so I don't know how this has changed, but it floored me how little people actually explored beyond the topics handed to them by AOL.

AOL ****s with your operating system on almost every level. It will actually overwrite core system files permanently and do God knows what to your registry. And the best part? YOU CAN'T UNINSTALL IT!:shaking:

:sigh: I've said it before and I guess some people are just as stupid as they look, because for the eighth time, i'll say it again. If I had any other choice, I would have dropped AOL long ago, but I don't, so I'm stuck with it. If you have a problem with me using it, ***** at someone else.

They didn't shop around very much if they picked perhaps the most expensive dialup ISP there is. You've probably got the kind of parents who think they know everything about computers because they're out of college, even though they've never touched a computer in their entire lives. Ever wonder why tech support people hate their jobs?

No one is picking on you for being an AOL user Hippo, as you aren't the one paying the bill and therefore have no say in the decision.  I knew that, and I'll wager a lot of other people did too.  But the fact remains (as you are alluding to with this thread) that the a large portion of AOL users are complete 'tards.  So rather than feeling picked on, join us in the AOL bashing! :D

EDIT: and the internet is full of rich and vibrant communities like this one.  The fact that one exists (though I would hardly consider it either rich or vibrant) around an ISP is somewhat odd, and it makes me wonder if the biggest selling point for AOL is that artificial community that it tries to create with those message boards and such.  Never mind that you're more likely to have an intelligent conversation with a houseplant than someone else on those boards, if just by sheer weight of numbers.

i remember when compuserv, aol, and a few others that are lost in the depths of time were fighting for supremacy.

I remember when AOHell first started mailing out disks - we had been using [crappy] local isps and tried [crappier] AOH3ll for 15 minutes.  [this was like.. 1994...] My parents who are techno-n00bs laughed, said "that is crap, fsck that ****"

Poppycock. You can uninstall anything. Just delete with sufficient abandon, it'll go away. Trust me on this.

Yeah, but Windows will also "go away" too because AOL infests many of Windows' core files.
