XP firewall works too well for me, actually, I have to switch it off from times to times coz it stops even file tranfers
I like XP too, nothing wrong with it, excepted you need a big machine ( but you need one for everything, so... )

It will. MS will read all your keystrokes and set it up so that if you say anything about security holes they can come round and "dissappear" you.

About the only way MS will ever silence criticism since they are obviously incapable of fixing the problem in the first place.

i've actually got XP's firewall switched off, and i just use Zonealarm.. works well enough for me..

Am I the only one in the universe who never had problems with MS operating systems?
Here's a tip: Install less crap in your pc and it will be stable, safe and faster.

nope.. i've never had XP bluescreen.. NEVER!!...as for 98, i knew what bluescreened it..

Oh yes...the fabed Trusted Computer scheme thats a load of bullocks if you ask me.  I wrote an essay going over the scheme and the entire concept makes me very worried.  It gives way too much arbitrary control to Microsoft and it gives them way too much power to undercut their competitors by just not allowing, for instance, documents from Word to be read by Word Perfect because not all the security keys point to Microsoft.

VERY worrying system...we'll see how much the critics can cut it back to something that may agree with the Constitution or the Charter.

Oh and most of all...it does nothing to address the problems that we currently experience with Windows and Microsoft software.  The security holes will be there, it just means that they may not be able to muck with a few well protected files.

Liar.

I've used every MS operating system since MS-DOS 2.0. I've used every GUI system they've created up to XP. DOS didn't crash much, but its not really and operating system. Its a boot loader.
 
-Win16 systems? Crashy crashy, even on good hardware.
-Win9x? Crashy crashy, because of poor programming on MS's part AND on the application developers parts.
-WinNT? Continual improvement to 3.51. NT4 was still crash prone, due to some stupidities in the HAL and the various compatibility layers (OS2, anyone? POSIX?).
-Win2k? Ah, now we get into interesting stuff. Complete rewrite of the kernel. Complete rewrite of the various HALs. Intelligent handling of core-system failures. Unfortunately, it still occasionally blue screens or freezes. Not often though.
-WinXP? other than the fact that it bundles more stuff than I want, I don't have much to complain about. Its still got some of the Windows stupidities, but most of my complaints here are political/geeky. A few startup crashes, and one or two problems with hardware.

Let's put it this way: if you have never had problems with Microsoft operating systems, I suggest you go buy a lottery ticket. Immediately. Better yet, buy a ticket from every lottery in every state. With luck like yours, you'll be rich enough to buy Microsoft outright.

The thing crashed so much on me I had to uninstall it and go back to win98SE ( huh! ) THE DAY AFTER I had installed it :/
I guess it didn't like the AMD+ATI combo, or something

Well, it took less than 24hours and at least as many blue screens to decide that win2K was the worst peace of crap ever devised by Micro$oft. All that on a clean, freshly formated HD.
So later I got my hands on XP, and apart from a weird message at startup, from times to times ( about a serious error and how windows fixed it - which is not true since I have to reboot when it tells me that, or I won't be able to do anything ), well I have no pbs whatsoever.
It could use more ram tho.

Wow, Venom. I find Win2k to be the most stable version of a Microsoft OS ever. I use Win2k AdvServer on my desktop machines, and have administered it professionally for the last several years. My only real problem with Win2k is that when you're using it as a webserver, its way too easy to rape the process table, leaving the machine crawling ultra slowly. For desktops though, it can't be beat (in the MS world).

win2k had some major driver issues, if I recall corectly, this may have been the problem

Win2k has always been my OS "rock" since its release. Never had a days problem with it, except for when my actual hardware went haywire and even then it happily corrected itself upon replacement hardware being installed.

Venom the mostly likely problem I can think of is that yours RAM was not good enough.

Windows 2000 is extremely *****y about RAM - you must ensure a 100% reliability to install the OS.

I don't know wheter this could have been your case, but I've seen a couple of PCs going haywire with win2k when one or two of their memory modules where comming from lesser manufacturers.

BTW mikhael can you point me to an actually useful source of learning all the tricks and features of MS Win2k then their native support or all the lamer crap that floats around?

Things like list of all the command promt commands (not just the ones that help list, but all the integrated programes and features).
