NEITHER

Get a ibm-compatable dude, seriously

[Only reason why I am still against mac is because of the whole Motorola processor thing]

I wish I had that kind of money to throw into my computer.....
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I know a fair amount about Macs as I sell them but I'm not a fan and I can go into reasons why if you want me to.  Its more a matter of preference than anything else but I'm still not a fan.

Ignore Kazan. He's being bigotted again. Go for the G5 if you can afford it. They're sweet machines and there's nothing productive that they cannot do.

mikhael: how is it bigotted to dislike hardware because it's not compatable with most of the rest of hte hardware out there -- i dislike motorola processors because of their assbackwards edianness

also their mhz-to-mips ratio isn't the best

what I LIKE about Mac: Their Operating system is a formt of UNIX w00t, they are fairly user-friendly, they have fairly decent plat-panels, they get nice video cards like the radeon, and have fast ram

Intels are the screwy ass-backwards endianness. Just take a look at any NON-intel device. They all match with motorolas. Heck, anything that speaks TCP/IP is the same.

I wouldn't worry much about mips-vs-mhz ratios. I've pretty much given up on paying attention to it. My 1.3gHz Thinkpad was not qualitatively different than my 2.6gHz AMD desktop. All I care about these days is portability, hard drive, portability, display, portability, power supply, portability and um... portability.

If you're looking at a laptop purchase, there's of real importance that you can do on an Intel box that you can't just as well on a Mac box.

God I never thought I'd see the day I argued for a Mac.

Flat panels are designed by Samsung so you can get Samsung LCD's with essentially the same parts for your PC (different styling).  As for mhz to MIPS...not sure on numbers but its definately in the realm of having a 1.0 Ghz G4 being similar to something in the 2.2-2.4 Ghz range for Intel.  I'm not going into technological debates...Apple puts together a relatively solid product - I don't like their OS and the way it works, I find its user friendlyness counter intuitive, the hardware is expensive if something goes wrong (and it does seem to just as much as anywhere else), OS bugs are not uncommon and crashing is not uncomon either (the myths of stability certainly are nowhere to be seen in OS 9 or OS X 10-10.3).  Generally the problems are applications and less drivers...but it seems to be about equal with Windows XP.

It is nice and shiny...well designed in terms of looks and ergonomics.  To top it off, the one button mouse is so 1980's.  Please get a dual button :D

Most of the stuff is a preference issue but I guess I thought I should weigh in on it.  Just don't assume automatic superiority over PC's...rather a fairly well put together package at the par level.

If you want a secondary computer and something that is a little bit cheaper a G4 tower may do the trick just as well. Not the fancyness of the G5 but it doesn't carry the price tag either.

the fact that 80x86 chips have their binary order in the same order that we write it on paper sure makes alot more sense than bassackwards

also there are a lot more chips out their running big-endian [aka 80x86 order] instead of little-endian

Pc chips, maybe.  Motorola is the largest manufacturer in the world, IIRC.

As I recall when I was doing x86 asm, intel's swap their byte order, so everything is backwards. Something I would write as "a3 14" was "15 a3" in memory. That doesn't look like its the same order I wrote it.

Motorola is out of the game, the G5 is an IBM/Apple production (although based on the Motorola/IBM/Apple PowerPC chip) being unix and user-centric this system sets you at the head of it (instead of fighting windows). If you're a programmer you can even work on porting FreeSpaceOpen to the Mac (hey that would be nice :-) I even dare to say that in a production environment you get more done on a mac (tight integration, solid solutions) (i gave up on windows 7 years ago). Now you can argue if you need a laptop or a desktop. Do you switch rooms a lot? on the road or at friends a lot?

Personal preference: don't get a Mac.  I really don't have any major problems with them (although they can be real pains to administrate) but they are more expensive than a PC for about the same level of functionality.  I also really dislike the mac human interface devices (mice, keyboards, etc) but that's just a personal preference and they can be replaced.

Desktop or Laptop: Unless you have a specific reason to get a laptop, don't.  If you're debating which one you should get then you already have an answer, get the desktop just so everything is spaced out enough to comfortably use.  Not to mention that the average new desktop is a technological generation ahead of the average new laptop available at the same time.

NEVER buy a new laptop. They're **** except for light-load functions such as word processing and playing music, and one made three years ago will do both just fine and cost ****loads less. They're also a pain in the ass to maintain or modify, so it's best to have one where if it gets ****ed you can just throw it away and get another.

Macs? I suppose I've probably related my mac horror story before. They're not overall as useful as regular PCs- supposedly not terrible, either, but I can't confirm that from any experience I've ever had- but they've got some nice features PCs typically don't. Though nowadays as Apple is kinda trying to work its way into the PC market that's changing- most of the nice things about macs (monitors, some of the apple-specific software, etc.) are becoming available on PC.

Mik: Kaz is right. Little-endianness isn't just backwards, it's downright evil. Think about it- the least coming before the first- is this not a clear reference to Satan's ultimate agenda? Worse yet, what if someone transmits the text of the Bible on a Mac- on the most basic level, the computer is reading the Bible backwards- the most famous sign of demonic possession there is!

See? Solid proof that Steve Jobs is the Antichrist.
