Foolish, brand-chasing mortal. Prior to the Radeons above 9600, ATI had never made a good graphics chipset.

The chipset in the GameCube, however, is NOT fuzzy and is indeed pretty damn good. It also wasn't designed or built by ATI. It was designed and built by a company that ATI bought.

Don't buy a console based on graphics. Buy it based on whether or not it has games you like.

(NB:  nvidia is wrongly given as the 'flipper' developer at one point.... directly above a bloody great big diagram saying 'ATI FLIPPER GPU' on it. :) )

Developer of the flipper was ArtX.

I got a PS2 for Christmas, way better buy and more games than an Xbox.

Plus, the controls are easier (not because of the size, tho)

X-Box has HALO, and will soon have STALKER and that nifty upgrade of Conker's Bad Fur Day.

If you must waste your money, that'd be the closest to a good investment I can think of.

Though if you're trying to waste your money, I suppose that's precisely what you're not looking for... ah well.

What does X-Box have besides Halo???? Nothing.  What does Gamecube have, only the best games on the market out there.  Get yourself a gamecube, best 100 bucks you'll ever spend.

Crimson Skies, GTA3, Morrowind, several quadrillion nice racing games, Prince of Persia, and a significant chunk of the games that are out for PC.

Yep, sure sounds like nothing to me.

Way I see it, it's still not worth a buy, but man, in three or four years when people start selling their Xboxes for like $5... wheeee!

Seriously, you can't really enumerate specific, acclaimed titles in defense of a console. On that same note, it's unfair, and quite unfounded to say that any one console has no good games. Keep in mind that this is all very subjective. You have to base such arguments on facts or postulates.

Um, why not? What else are you supposed to buy a console for? Nifty little cheap plastic gadgets that plug into it? Number of pieces it shatters into when you drop it from a distance? Glory hole support?

This is like that stupid defense of Linux where proponents try to claim that it doesn't matter that you can't run ****-all on most versions because it's otherwise a very nice operating system. Really, come now.

Seeing as how each console has literally hundreds of games, the odds of there being no good games for any console are exceedingly slim. Most people who make this claim haven't played a single console's library of games in its entirety.

However, a simple enumeration of acclaimed games for a console is simply far too subjective to carry any real weight. Further, these days, many mainstream titles are making their way to multiple consoles. You can list games that you think are good, and someone can respond merely by saying "I think all of those games suck," and there would be absolutely nothing wrong with that response if they have actually played those games. They can also mention that these games are on their favored console, if that is the case.

Frankly, I think the concepts of console war and console loyalism are some of the most asinine things to come from gaming. In the grand scheme of things, the differences between consoles aren't nearly as great as people make them out to be. This is becoming even more true now that many mainstream games are being released for multiple consoles.

I think people develop fanboyism because of attachments to certain games for a particular console, and derive their opinion of the console from these certain games. For a Sony fanboy, this may be a Final Fantasy game, for a Nintendo loyalist, perhaps Mario. Currently I think the PlayStation2 is the best console simply because it has so many more games. I wouldn't mind owning an Xbox or a Gamecube as well, but I'm not exactly rich.

You think asinine fanboyism is news? I don't think there's been one technical advance or offshoot that hasn't been viciously fought over by fanatical if sedentary mobs in the last ten years.

It's something to ride your ego on if you've got nothing else- "I may be a virgin at thirty, living in my mom's basement, working for minimum wage as a janitor, and balding, but Goddamnit, I've got a damn fine game system"- with varying degrees of severity. Hell, there's even become in trolling an entire near-Olympic-level sport of hunting down and picking fights with those whose self-esteem is so low as to provide only weak resistance.

But that's largely irrelevant, as I haven't seen this deal get genuinely heated yet here.

Yes, there are lots of games for the consoles, that's rather the point. But you can't exactly dismiss the specific games for each as irrelevant- on a console, it's entirely the point. We're not pitting an N64 against a Gamecube, here, what's in the box is gonna be besides the point 90% of the time- it's what you can run on it. And, by the very nature of consoles, you can only run games. So, you go for the console that has the most games that you, personally, want on it. Subjective, yes. But so's basically any rating of quality when it comes to games. I don't know exactly what you're looking for, here, some divine revelation that one console is Better in the absolute than any other? Have fun. Don't bother us about it.

The question of this thread, last I checked, was whether an X-Box was worth the buy (along with some niggling hardware problem that got disposed of rather quickly). That's about as subjective a call as you can get. I'd say, you got the money, buy me an Xbox. Others think other game systems are more worth the money. We're all giving our reasons why. They're all quite subjective and pretty silly to boot. Getting up on a high horse about some objective truth that just plain ain't there doesn't elevate the discussion or indeed further it in any other direction, though it does produce irritable semirants from my direction.

So the point is, is the Xbox worth byuing?
The Xbox will have ( the three pics are ingame screenshots, btw ):
-Halo2:

No need to introduce, I suppose.
-Ninja Gaiden:

... her, no, joking ( tho it's supposed to be on the dvd :D ) :p :

I've seen it running, it's darn cool, the guy is running on the walls jumping to the roof, throwing his shurikens, etc. And that screenshot really doesn't give it justice.
-and Fable ( Peter Mollineux? since big names seem to make people's days...):

A RPG, you start as a kid, and then you do what you want ( like most Bullfrog/Lionhead's games, you might say ). You can be good or bad, marry, etc. Scars stay on your character, if you achieve physical feats, your body becomes more muscular, if you live by night, you'll have a bleach skin, etc. The fights in the videos look quite violent, too.

The other consoles won't. Nough said :p

(There's also my little favourite outsider, Sudeki, but that's not one of the big names.)

Ahem.

Halo, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Project Gotham 1&2, Dead or Alive 3, Mechassault, Steel Battalion, Rallisport Challenge, Star wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Rainbow Six 3, Brute Force, Gunvalkyrie.

Care for me to continue? Those are just the best games I own, not counting cross platform games like Soul Calibur 2 or Colin McRae. Not even counting games like Crimson Skies or Top Spin which I've still yet to get or forthcoming games like BC, Fable and Halo 2 which are going to be THE console games of 2004 in my opinion.

I have a grand total of five GC games (though that's likely to improve soon).
