Not everyone can be as smart as you, Ven.

Why am I still coding at 12:35am?

You can indeed modify the SubD surfaces by modifying the low poly mesh (though it is completely different from a CAGE. Read the lightwave docs.) but as soon as you freeze the SubDs so they become real geometry, you lose that. This is STILL completely different from doing a smooth, which a totally different tool, which doesn't add any geometry at all.

Huh? Mesh smooth adds an awfull lot of geometry. Don't mistake with smooth shading ;)

Sticks, I was being ironical, so don't go condescendant on me, will you?

I'm not confusing it with smooth shading, Venom.

SMOOTHING (the 'm' tool by default) adds NO GEOMETRY.
SubDs (the 'tab' tool by default) adds lots of geometry.

You really need to sit down and learn lightwave if you're going to talk about its tools.

I was comparing MAX smooth and LW subD, so I asked KMN how subD was working.
Anyway, to be honest, I don't give a friggin' rat's ass in hell at all, just take my original post and remove the parenthesys. Voila, happy?

Yes, it works much better without the utterly incorrect parenthetical expression mentioning SubDs. :D

cool :)
I don't like arguing over stuff like that, it's pointless and bad for the skin :p

OK, I've got my self sorted out.
Heres an exe, dont get too excited it might not look as good as Bob's implemenation.

Also remember that the cracks are a known bug Im working on.

http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/rtform.rar

To correct the instructions on the console (cant be borthered to upload again) 1 for original mesh and 2 and 3 for factors of trueform.

The cracks issue has turned out to be fairly complex and I'll have to take my time to come up with something that doesnt compromise load time too much.

Looking good RT! :) Those cracks look like one of my lightwave models if I merge polygons together and forget to weld the vertices back on before smoothing.

And yes, I know it's not that before anyone says :D
