Thing is, we were actually expecting the next-gen console. Unless they're planning on pitching this thing against Billbox 2 and PS3...

The concept is intriguing but this isn't going to rescue nintendo's crisis, I thought personally nintendo were finally getting onto the right track. I was wrong :sigh: , I just hope they got some ideas for the ngc :) and good ones because the ps3 is going to be a big competitor, as for the xbox..its not very popular..

Nah. I reckon they won't reveal that for a while yet, IIRc the Gamecube is having a bit of a sales surge - revealing the successor could put people off buying the GC.

Honestly, I think what Nintendo's fall was always the targetting of the young kids market.  It suddenly became the Pokemon console and all the games you'd see for the GC was for little kids.  Unlike PS2 and XBox, whree they have a full range of games but mostly target Teen.  Plus they have titles for a more Mature audience.

Nintendo was without a doubt THE game system in 8-bit and Super Nintendo.  Sega could barely keep up.  But when it went to the N64 and competed against Sony, all went to poop.  Again, it was all those kids games.

I think Nintendo only has a hold on the portable games market wtih their Gameboys... but that's about it.

they can compete with Sony and MS if they wanted to.  THey have a solid control the handheld market so its expected the move in that direction. But N has learned from its misteaks in the past,  so i can expect a little more when their next console comes out. Lets face it, GC is a kickass console. It only suffered from bad games.

Well... 8-player Mario Kart isn't exactly what we were hoping for, but Nintendo have always been rather wary of launching net play without a suitable game base. In any case, 8-player MK is supposed to be the dog's danglies if you can assemble the required kit

Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Resident Evils aplenty (including some exclusives), Eternal Darkness *pauses for breath* Metroid, F-Zero, Soul Calibre, Turok 4. And that's without looking up any more in a magazine. Oh, and Hitman and XIII. And Killer 7.

Meh. You're closer than the other guy, certainly, but I wouldn't say GC suffered from bad games - see the list further up this post and add Zelda which is quite frankly amazing. Anyone who dismess Zelda citing the cel-shading is ignorant and is missing out :)

And that's all I have to say about that

The other guy?  I have a name, ya know (although not pronouncable) :p

And I think most of the games you've listed are recent games, no?  Which is why I guess they're seeing a surge in recent sales?  I loved Nintendo and would have bought one instead of my PS2 two years ago if they had a collection of games that were worth playing if you were older than 10.  Resident Evil was the only game they had that was "Mature" for the longest time.

And you contest that they have the solid hold on the portable market?  What other company makes portable game systems and holds the market then?  I don't see NGage as stealing the market in the few months it's been out.  And as far as I can see, GC is in 3rd when it comes to console systems behind Ps2 and Xbox.  If they have a hold on some other market, then by all means share it.

[color=66ff00]People who buy N-Gage's soon regret it. The damn thing is so badly designed, like playing cricket with a wet fish.

As for Nintendo being third, I wouldn't doubt that but I have to admit if I was going to buy a 'next gen.' console I'd grab a cube first and foremost. The games available for it far exceed the games on either the billbox as DG lovingly calls it :) or the PS2 which as far as I'm concerned is still riding a wave of hype created by sony's grasp on weak minded 20-30 year olds (buy me, I look cool). The only game that I've been geniunely interested in since MGS2 came out was ICO.

In graphic quality, who beats who?  I've heard Xbox was the best of the bunch, others tell me that it was the GameCube, with the Ps2 being less than Xbox.

I also agree with u, Maeg, that Ps2 is more hype than anything.  They have good games but they eventually make it to the other consoles anyway.  If I had the money I'd have all three, but I don't.  And when I got the Ps2 it was only cuz there wasn't anything out by Gamecube that I thought was worth having.

I don't even buy games anymore, though.  The one thing I always hate about the new consoles (ps2, xbox, gc... and only maybe just ps2 and xbox cuz I don't know about GC) was that every game that came out could be beaten in 15 hours (except for rpg's).  They're all so pretty with full surround sound dolby and incredible graphics, but you'd finish it in a week (less if u had more time on your hands).  So why not just rent them and return it when you're done?  Plus all the storylines suck.

Nothing like the old games...  They didn't stress on graphics, just on playability and story.  Anyone remember the original Rygar?

Ps2 has PES3 and GTA (well, for 6 months at least).  That's about it.  Of course, you can;t get PES on a Gamecube or X-box, so I bought a PS2.  I've bought a total of about 3 games - GTA:VC, PES2 and PES3.

Hell no. I contest your statement that the hand-held market is Nintendo's only success. Jesus, this is how mikhael must feel.

I'm sure they're selling Gamecubes, but I would hardly call it a success.  Let me rephrase that as they apparently are selling gamecubes now.  Perhaps they're having success with them now, but in the beginning and for a while their sales were lukewarm.

This article shows that Gamcecube had to report a loss because of lackluster sales of Gamecubes.  It also states how they had to stop production of the gamecubes to clear inventories.

But all wasn't loss with Gamecube as because of lowering the price to $99, they had a huge surge in sales for the holidays.  Here, read this article  that indicates that because of their price drop to $99 that they may have unseated #2 Xbox, which I think was still selling at like $169 or something.
