I like toplay certain games online but since I bought my new system my pings have been really high. My old system  had a celeron 450 mhz processor, 63 ram 56k v92 modem,a 32 mb tnt2, and win98. My new system has a 1.6 ghz athlon processor, 384 ram, geforce fx 5200 ultra 128 mb, v92 56k modem, and winxp. Now they both have 56k modems and I have a better system but the old sytem got pings of 200 to 300, my new system gets pings of 450 and higher. Any ideas on how to get lower pings without expensive cable or dsl?

I suggest ctrl-alt-del and closing all the crap that XP runs in the background using the processes manager thingy.

pings of 200 - 300 are pretty damn slow as it is.

check to see if the phone lines are staticy.  good luck working with the phone company to fix that.

make sure you're not running stuff like IE, Mozilla, DAP, FTP Clients or stuff like that in the back ground.

Here is a resource to help you do what an0n advised with the 'processes thingy'. Don't just turn things off willy-nilly, you can torch XP good if you turn something off that it really needs.

Some modems just works better than others. You might want to go to modem manufacturer's site to see whether the manufacturer has AT codes for the modem listed.
Try AT codes which limits modem speed to, say 44000. Sometimes it helps.

Or even better, get a broadband connection.

I always assumed ping was an ISP issue ?

Ping depends on the number of installed and used network protocols, number of protocol connections, used bandwidth, drivers used on the modem or another device used to connect you to internet. But of course ISP is also a big factor. I probably forgot to mention a few other factors but who cares.

But really, I use internet so much nowadays that DSL is much cheaper than any modem connection, because ISP always taxes you for dial up connection more or less.  At least with DSL I know how much I pay, regardless of how much I use the net.

Broadband's not expensive, AceAceAce. I pay £15 a month for 600k cable and most people here seem to be getting cheaper deals then that. Many 56k companies will charge you something similar for 24/7 connection

As for high pings...bah, who cares, as long as you have a fast PC and some skill...it doesn't matter if you have a ping of 200-300 (I have that high ping ussually and I kick ass!)

it matters when Counter strike servers are booting you out of games because of too high a ping.

Very simple solution.  Get rid of Steam.  Now play http://www.firearmsmod.com and be happier.

meh, yeah pings are pretty much everything in online gaming... i'm going from 56K (temporary) --> DSL this thursday or friday, so we'll see how that works.  Cable's faster, but DSL get better pings, so we'll see.

I tried of your suggestions and had no luck. With my provider its 50 bucks a month for broadband. With a 200 to 300 ping I kick ass but with 450 I suck.
