Eidos announced today that Ion Storm has incorporated both first and third person playable points of view for gamers in the upcoming Spring 2004 release of Thief: Deadly Shadows.

In Thief: Deadly Shadows, gamers will be able to play in either third person or first person perspectives, and shift seamlessly between each on the fly. The new third person perspective will further immerse players into the role of Garret, the master Thief. Sneaking through darkly lit environments, stealing riches and ambushing unwary targets in third person presents a new, visceral gaming experience to the Thief franchise.

Still, the tension fuelled gameplay in classic Thief first person view is there for returning fans of the series and newcomers alike.

Ion Storm's trademark dynamic lighting and shadow technology manifests in Thief: Deadly Shadows new levels of depth and tension to the game's environments. Characters and objects cast real shadows that effect stealth gameplay, requiring the player to manipulate darkness and light to create your own shadows to hide in.

"Thief's groundbreaking gameplay laid the foundation for the popular action stealth genre," said Matt Gorman, Brand Manager at Eidos. "Thief: Deadly Shadows revisits these roots and broadens its gameplay with the addition of the cinematic third person perspective and Ion Storm's dynamic lighting and shadow technology."

The long-awaited game is the third installment in the action stealth series originally created by Looking Glass Studios, and it is currently in development for the Xbox video game system from Microsoft and PC.

The textures look really bland and smooth.. it desparately needs bump mapping or something. That said the lighting looks pretty nice.

Looks good, though it looks like the fans need to do a high res texture pack for it, just like with DX:IW:doubt:

seems like the up 'n' coming games from Ion Storm are putting alot of emphasis on X-Box. Seen as Thief and Deus ex are two of my favourites, I really hope they don't "do a Halo"

Smaller texture memory IIRC.  Plus an older GPU.

If that's the XBox version, they've probably just turned off some of the shaders for performance whilst testing. I've seen the XBox test builds running with all the shaders turned on and it looks so good it'll make your eyes bleed.

As for IS:A going all Xbox or lagging PC releases far far behind XBox releases, I don't see it happening. They do all their development in parallel.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

That's tech.
What I see is that the games look as good, and run better than on a PC. Besides, the Xbox can run at high res, just most TV can't.
That's fact.

(well... I was sold from the moment I heard that the game was coming but... :P )
Habeeb it...

Thief 3 will probably suffer from the same "streamlining" policiy they employ at IS for their new (read xbox) games like Deus Ex: IW did. Which involves something like taking out leaning out of a stealth game because it adds nothing to the gaming experience

True, but if you design a console to run at 2 res', you're (I'd imagine) going to have to make some sort of sacrifice/compromise to make sure games can run on both normal and HD TV (because the latter requires about twice as many pixels to be rendered).

Generally the sacrifice comes in the form of a drop in framerate, thought it's not too bad to be honest. It depends on the game really.
