That's why, realistically, the only option would be to merely deflect a threatening asteroid past Earth. Which of course relies on spotting it significantly ahead of impact time.

Let's just hope we manage to dodge asteroids until we can develop and deploy a network of Sooper Dooper Space Cannons.

  • Already told you people too much!
People needed to get more scared in that movie (wasn't very convincing), but otherwise good:)

Bleh, thought it was crap. Typical forced sappy Speilberg. Armaggeddon blew it away (even the whole "miners in space" thing seemed kinda funny).

Simply put:

Deep Impact: Bland characters, typical love affair, bla bla bla.

Sorry to add to the gloom but asteroid impacts are not the only thing that could wipe out  agood chunk of the popultion.

Super volcanos (calderas)-don't call me on the spelling, could be just if not more devistating and we know less about these than asteroid impacts by about a factor of 1000.

Super volcano ( area of presuriesed magma below the surface that builds up until it errupts and are on the scale of the yellowstone national park or bigger)

And asteroids are relitevly well observed. i.e any big enough to have global species thretening results are quite well monitored

in the big picture one city or even country does not count for that much species wize.

Sorry to be so cheerful!

I'm seriously tempted to stop watching horizon. Every series they have a new way that nature can kill you (half of which I'd never heard of before).

1) Large almost undeflectable asteroids.
2) Smaller metors like the ones that caused Tunguska and Wabae which are deflectable but number in the thousends.
3) Super volcanos
4) Mega tsunami (Like the La Palma one which is predicted to wipe out the entire Eastern seaboard.
5) Global warming cauing the release of methane hydrate and resulting in an 8-10 degree rise in global temperature.
6) Lake overturn (okay it only affects a few places in Africa but it's pretty damn scary)

It may be useful one day though. I visit Eastern America about once a year. It's useful to know that I should driving inland if I hear about a big volcanic eruption in La Palma. :D

I've got Deep Impact on vid somewhere (recorded off TV aaaages ago) but I do think that Armageddon blows it apart. :)

I don't give a damn about whether or not it's 'good science,' as I do enjoy a good movie. Armageddon for one thing had characters I actually wanted to pay attention to, and didn't focus stupidly heavily on the Ben/Liv romance. I loved the 'side story' about Chick's ex-wife and his estranged son. It was very nicely done.

But of course, Armageddon's greatest weapon against most similar 'summer blockbuster' movies is the score. NOT Aerosmith, I mean the proper orchestral score which took me five seconds to fall in love with. That opening flute solo is beautiful!
