Author Topic: Updated Starchart?  (Read 4578 times)

Is there an updated starchart out there somewhere?  The last one I have was made by Icefire and has an error on it.   It lists Alphard twice, and I was curious if anyone had fixed this.  http://www.gb-blackknight.com/FS2/fs_images/nodemap_gtva.jpg

Do a search on the HLP forums for "Node map", you'll get about a hundred :p

Thanks, but any node thread I go through, the pic links are all dead, or not what I'm looking for.  :(  Although, I did find a nice one by Solatar, despite it being re-arranged on a different angle than what I'm used to seeing.  I was hoping for one like Icefire's with the FS2 look...

Here is mine; nothing really fancy, but it's very close to the original and incorporates the FS2 changes.

Alpha Centauri (Proxima Centuri B) should technically be the closest to us...

Thanks CP, I would use that, except my fanfic includes systems just beyond the Altair system.  :(   I actually managed to find another map made by Icefire that I found in an archive I had.

You have to take into account that in a map you only see 2 axis, so although it doesn't seem, Alpha Centauri may be closer than all those systems than one can expect.

In real life, we know that syrius is more than 10x farther than Alpha Centauri.

EDIT:
Proxima Centauri B??

Sirius is only 8.6 LY away twice as far as the Alpha Centuri System.

The reason why Alpha Centauri is further away is nothing to do with the map being in 2D.  The node map simply doesn't represent real space in any way, shape, size or form. It's simply a map showing which stars are linked together.

Theoretical question... How long would it take using post-Capella GTVA technology to travel from Alpha Centauri to Sol?

The orion moves at 10m/s. Light moves at roughly 30,000,000m/s. It takes light 4.3 years to cover the distance. I'm sure you can work the rest out for yourself :)

even then, a message by good ole radio would work.

but that's the largest plot hole in FS2.

It's Dubhe, which is a star in real life, and you can get a clearer look at the name in some of the FS2 command briefings.

That particular thing may not be a plot hole; here is a short post I made on this about ten months ago:

This Earth communication issue has been brought up a couple of times around here; I personally think that the best explanation is that the GTVA has actually contacted Sol but either did not recieve any response at all or got some distressing news, and are not publicizing it to prevent public morale from suffering.

Wouldn;t it take many years for a message to reach Earth and be replied?  Even if someone was listening (and on a similar note, why would Earth have or need radio telescopes when they had interstellar travel?)

yeah, but 32 years between FS1 and FS2 should have been more than enough time if sent from alpha centauri or some nearby place like that.

Alpha Centauri is only 4.3 LY away and even if they had to go to Barnard's or Sirius they are still within 9LY of Sol. There was time for a message or two to go back and forth.

Question:
On that map http://www.gb-blackknight.com/FS2/fs_images/nodemap_gtva.jpg I noticed that there are systems of Mintaka, Kaus Borealis and Gienah Cygni. Are those the systems used in the Warzone campaign? Or are they from somwhere else?
