'Rechargable' hull plating ala Enterprise.

Best of both worlds, bizatch. :p

It really depends on what I'll be fighting more of. Capships (with AAA and flak), hull. Dogfighting, shields. Generally, shields are far more versatile because you can boost them as needed, and also make quick attack runs while virtually preserving all of your hull integrity. Considering that fighters usually fight fighters, I opt for the shields.

THE HARD LIGHT ARRAY. Always makes you say wow.

Then I would suggest, bomber have high hull strength and dickweed shields, and fighters (hence the Sepharis) have high ammounts of shields and low hull quality. That just about solved all our little problems, now doesnt it? ;7 ;7 ;7

That smilie is scaring me. You're too enthusiastic.

Generally, bombers have high hull and shields. They're bigger, so that's allowed. If they had pansy shields, fighters would go after them with Maxims.

Wow, same result...
So, to spice up things a bit, i'll say that two cruisers strategically placed are able to take down 3 wings of Ares fighters with little to average damage...

Yes, but since bombers have low shield fighter escort would be necessary, making the engagements all but tactical. That would be good for player to think about. :D

The idea is to have the player to use the wingmans wisely...
Since he can't do everything and hope to survive he must put some trust into his wingmen...
If i'll ever find how to put up a demo that won't be an 80mb monster to download maybe i'll be able to show something more...

As far as the shield recharge thing goes, admittedly if you are being utterly blattered then it won't help, but then, under that kind of fire, your Hull would go down just as quickly. However, if you survive the attack with 30% Hull, you are stuck with it (normally) for the rest of the combat, whereas if you survive with 10% shield, it's easy to bring it back up to 70-80%. Just like the original FS2, if you are doing an attack run under that intense firepower, then you are probably going about your attack wrong ;) And there are often gaps in combat where the player can re-arm etc, you can use this time to bring the shields back up ;)

maybe this should be the "extract Zarax's campaign plot" thread ?

I would say balance is more a FRED issue than ship specifics, but that's just me.

Oh, there is no harm in this...
Actually, great parts of the plot have been released multiple times, but no one seems to remember... This particular issue is about chapter 5, while chapter 1 is still in development...
Expect to hate me when it comes to deal with capships :)
Anyways, some show-up won't hurt:

"Capella is still near, and what remains of the fleet is stretched, barely capable to keep order in most systems, while rogues and pirates spreads up...
As a stopgap measure GTVA allowed the creation of civilian self defence fleets, with space police duties...
After your retirement from GTVA active duty you find work inside Galactic Corporation Alliance light defence fleet.
You will start with police patrol against pirates, but there is something deeper... much deeper..."

Features:

- 24 to 30 missions
- Old and new friends from FSPort, Inferno and a number of other sources, pending authorization...
- Fly with limited resources, and take care of your wingmen much more than FS2
- You'll never approach capships like before... Fear the turrent of turrets!
- Use of SCP features like ballistic weapons
- Specialized faction arsenals and battle tactics
- And much more...

Release date: Some time before Duke Nukem forever, depending on my faulty HD and eventual FREDer help

So then, how would you set a cap ship with just torpedos, for instance?

Most cruisers use more torpedoes than beams...
They have longer range and better ROF...
Plus terran ships are *****es to fight at close range because of their EMP missile batteries...

Ya, ya, I know, but how COULD you make it so that, say, a Fenris had a large barage of torpedos?
