Lacking good hardware 3D support to know for sure but it does work.  The last bit is the networking stuff that I'm working on now.  The game is going to be fully supported on PPC though.

Of RAM?  Hell no!  Actually though, without 32-bit texture support, it uses about 200 meg and with some better memory management could be cut down a good bit but I doubt below 100 meg in mission.

I know that SDL support the Dreamcast and I believe the PS2 so it should be possible.  It would deffinitely be fun that's for sure. :D

Knoppix Disk with FS:SCP

I am looking into this by the way, Knoppix DVD with a full and ready to use install of FSO on it.  I'm pretty sure that the Freespace 2 license would allow this if not sold but I'm not sure if the Knoppix license contradicts this or not.  I'm going to try and get a working DVD going this weekend.  Using a CD isn't really an option though since there isn't really a way to swap disks that I know of and it's never going to fit on one, unless it's a demo version.

considering the EULA for FS2 says you can distribute it to friends :D

Taylor: FS2 without voice, music and CB anis is 250megs rarred.

would it be possible to rip out KDE along with all the other programs? Also, would this require less, more, or equal amounts of RAM?

but if you get a DVD image ready, i might be able to get a DVD burner, and start distributing this among friends.

on a DVD you have plenty of room for a full fs2 install

yeah, but not every computer has a DVD drive, and DVD burners are even rares. so if we could fit something on a CD, even just a multi client, it would be very nice for LAN party's and stuff.

I'll try it both ways, a full DVD version and a cut down CD version.  If all of KDE and assorted programs, OO.org, graphics, development, and some language options are removed then it should fit on a CD.  I'll remove as much as possible to get as much of the game on a CD.  Won't be everything but plenty to still be fun.  Downloading these would be horrible so I could burn a DVD and a CD (that's a as in one set, not for everybody) and mail it to whoever wants to make copies of them.

As for RAM kasperl, it's really going to need (minimal) 256Meg for 16-bit color and 512Meg for 32-bit color textures.  Knoppix doesn't have the benifit of swap so it's all got to be in RAM, plus you're going to need some of it for a RAM disk for /home and for writeable game files (pilots, config files, etc.).  nVIDIA drivers for hardware 3D is also something that has to be considered, as well as newer ATI drivers.  Also X could end up using 100Meg after the game has been running for a while.

would it be possible to throw all the pilot files and the multi config files on a floppy?

and IIRC Knoppix is able to put a temp file on a FAT partition, could this option be used?

edit: would this be considered warez?

if not, i might ask/beg/bribe/blackmail an0n into hosting these.
Also, would there be sapce on the DVD for some MODs?

Download is an option taylor, just make a BitTorrent and we can share the load (at least for the CD-version this shouldn't be a problem) Things would be even better if we were to arrange a timeframe to download it (the more downloaders at any given time the more the load is shared among them)

no, is host as a rather strict no warez policy, and even he has is smart moments.

also, he already refused, something about raping bandwidth......

...er...would it be possible to...*thinks how to word it*...make it into a "Star Wars: Rogue Leader" like game? You could have both Space and surface bombardment missions...and missions that take place in more than one area. Plus the "SW:RL" engine is...fairly good (several thousand polies per ship...)

Just an idea...:)

We're kinda drifting of here... it was about gamecube -onto- knoppix distro.
@Kasperl (raping bandwidth...) that's exactly why a BitTorrent distro of the thingie would be wonderfull, sharing the bandwidth-load.

well, i can't really get BT to work over here, but we could spread something i gues....

I was saying that interpretation was questionable, and there is also a "we can change our minds at any time" clause last I checked ;) Which I am sure they have ;)

HOTU took down their distro, so that implies that somethign is up with being able to "distribute" the whole ball of wax.

I wonder if Interplay will return my emails now that they have re-released...
