perhaps some sort of weapon should be used that powers up like beam cannon ('cept there is a HUGE powerup-glow) and discharges in a rather -large- "ball" of energy.

If youmean the way they line up, it's just  the cubic UV map I made. I didn't feel like lining up UV's and the like, and for highly tiled ships, it usually works fine.
